Nine revives Halifax

Rebecca Gibney returns to forensic psychologist role as Nine revives another firebrand drama.

Rebecca Gibney is reprising her role as forensic psychiatrist Jane Halifax for a Nine mini-series, Halifax: Retribution.

Gibney previously played the role in some 20 telemovies from 1994 to 2002.

“I started it when I was about 28 -just a baby!” she recently told TV Tonight. “Fast-forward about 20 years and now I am old enough to play a forensic psychiatrist!”

In the new series Jane Halifax will face the most thrilling and dangerous case of her career when she hunts down a killer terrorising an entire city. As she is drawn into the killer’s web, has she put herself and her family in the firing line?

“I’m beyond thrilled to be re-teaming with Roger Simpson who created Jane Halifax and returning to Channel Nine where it all began,” she said.

“Nine was the first network I was ever employed by in Australia, in 1985 with Zoo Family then Flying Doctors, All Together Now and Halifax, and it’s really exciting to be working with them again in 2019.”

Michael Healy, Nine’s Director of Television, said: “We are delighted to welcome Rebecca back to Nine. She is a legend of Australian television and we are honoured that she will bring back one of Australia’s most iconic characters in the exciting new chapter of this renowned franchise.”

Original creator and writer Roger Simpson (Stingers, Satisfaction, Good Guys Bad Guys) returns as writer and producer, alongside executive producer Mikael Borglund and writers Mac Gudgeon (Killing Time) and Jan Sardi (Shine).

Roger Simpson said: “The opportunity to bring back my favourite creation two decades after Rebecca Gibney first brought Jane Halifax to life has been irresistible.”

Produced by Beyond Lonehand, filming will begin in 2019.

  1. They should get the rights for the original series for Stan. 9 needs to stop uploading series to 9now and put ER etc on them. 9now just needs to be catch up.

I hope this is better than Winter. We need an “crime of the week” show again not iust a season long murder mystery. Ruined winter for me.

    1. Firstly her prdn co. makes Wanted for Seven with Matchbox Pics., technically she isn’t “in” Seven so it’s possible to do both (indeed she did Rafters and Maria Korp Story for both networks at the same time). Secondly, Wanted is yet to be renewed and last numbers may make that a tall order.

      1. Thanks David. Damn I was hoping she’d now make those great shows for 9. Well at least Wanted had a good ending if it doesn’t come back. It didn’t end with a cliff hanger like the other 2 seasons.
