Northern Exposure revival on the way

Rob Morrow plans to return to Cicley, Alaska for a revival of quirky US drama.

If it’s good enough for SeaChange, it’s good enough for Northern Exposure.

A revival of Northern Exposure is currently in development at CBS.

Original series star Rob Morrow looks set to reprise his role as Dr. Joel Fleischman, as he returns to Cicely, Alaska, for the funeral of an old friend. Once there, he finds a new set of quirky characters and reunites with old ones.

The series ran for six seasons and over 100 episodes between 1990 and 1995, also starring John Corbett, Barry Corbin, Janine Turner, John Cullum, Darren E. Burrows, Cynthia Geary, Elaine Miles, and Peg Phillips.

Morrow will also executive produce in addition to starring with Corbett is attached as a producer only.

Josh Brand will write and executive produce, with Morrow, John Falsey, and Ben Silverman executive producing.

  1. Great to hear!
Used to adore NE all those years ago.
Such a good show – they did quirky so damn well.
So many shows since have tried and failed to varying degrees, to imitate this quirkiness.
Really hope it’s a good as the original.

      1. Picket Fences to an extent yes, Northern Exposure no, Twin Peaks debuted on TV in April 1990 and Northern Exposure 3 months later in July of 1990 as an 8 episode Summer fill-in for CBS. Filming of Northern Exposure had been completed before Twin Peaks had gone to air with only some post-production still happening. Some of the episodes had been filmed back in November and December of 1989 to catch the start of Winter (and to finish up in March/April), in fact when Northern Exposure was being filmed in Roslyn Washington, Twin Peaks was being filmed at the same time 45 miles away in the Snoqualmie Valley.

        1. City Mouse out of water is a recurring theme. Local Hero, Northern Exposure and Sea Change all used the idea with a skilled professional thrust into a quaint rural setting. And relied on the success of others in the genre to get up. Twin Peaks used that abit with Agent Cooper, but he was weirder than the town. It was more about Lynch’s continuing obsession with the dark superficial underbelly of small town America. Lynch bailed after 8 eps leaving Frost without a plan so NBC could turn it into a soap opera and parody of itself and was cancelled after a dreadful S2. We won’t talk about the ABC pressuring Cox to rush a S3 with Micallef as the romantic lead.

          1. Yep it is a common theme and like I said Picket Fences to an extent though they took their lead more from the Book (1956), Movie (1957) and TV Series Peyton Place (1964-69) than anything, to which even Twin Peaks owes some gratitude (along with many early films like Laura, Meshes of the Afternoon and of course his own Blue Velvet). Picket Fences did have the benefit of getting up because of Twin Peaks, as at the time people were looking for a quirky show a year after Twin Peaks had finished and along came Picket Fences with it’s What goes on behind the white Picket Fences theme.

In a comedy sense Bewitched, I Dream Of Jeanie along with Mork and Mindy where also fish out of water shows, with the biggest being the Beverly Hillbillies of course, though in reverse, so yep not a new type of thing.

  2. Apart from the below quip I did enjoy Northern Exposure and be an interesting one to come back, guess the mood of it will be slightly different though as Rob Morrow didn’t want to be there, however this time around he’ll want to be. Pity though they can’t restart the other show Rob Morrow was in before Numb3rs in Street Time that was a ripper that never really got the credits or ending it deserved in it’s short 2 seasons.

Oh and Free To Air, these types of shows getting redone is the reason a lot of us 57 year olds are drifting away to streaming, as when Picket Fences, The X-Files, and Northern Exposure were on and started we were the 29 to 32 year olds giving them the good ratings.

    1. *As in we’re looking for the quirky still as that is what we watched before (kind of reads like I meant we’re leaving because they are bringing those back).

    1. Maybe Picket Fences and we’ll finally get the proper cross-over with the X-Files that was kind of done but not because CBS and FOX nixed it (they ended up with similar episodes), could bring Chicago Hope in as well seeing Picket Fences and that did cross-over.

    2. It would be more like 60 something. I was in my 20s when 30something aired. i’m now in my 50s. They had a reunion of sorts in the show Brothers and Sisters.
