Regional writers join Matchbox script lab

Writers to work in a script development lab in Lismore on a new project, Best Medicine.

Screenworks and Matchbox Pictures have announced five early career regional writers for a new TV series Best Medicine project: Sue McPherson from Eumundi in Queensland, Jane Hampson from the Northern Territory, Meg Courtney-Hawke from Campbells Creek Victoria, Tristan Bancks (pictured) from Bangalow NSW, and Charlotte Brookes from Lismore NSW.

They will work alongside Holly Phillips and other consultants in a script development lab in Lismore.

Head of Development at Screen Australia, Nerida Moore said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for regional writers to develop their skills in TV, get noticed and launch their careers.”

Create NSW Acting Director Screen Investment, Engagement and Attraction Sally Regan said: “Create NSW is proud to continue our partnership with Screenworks and support emerging regional writers with this unique writers’ room initiative.”

“Matchbox prides itself on quality of storytelling through diversity of voices,” explained Matchbox Pictures Director of Scripted Development Debbie Lee. “Partnering with Screenworks, Create NSW and Screen Australia to tap into Australia’s under-represented regions provides a rich opportunity to harness the creative power of fresh and distinctive writing talent and we are thrilled to be working with such an exciting team on Best Medicine.”

Best Medicine is an original concept written by Tim Williams. When an out-of-work actor finds himself performing as a Clown Doctor in a teenage cancer ward, his life takes on unexpected new meaning through a ward of complex teenage patients.
