Rush case concludes, decision in 2019.

Lawyers for Geoffrey Rush ask the court for substantial damages as lawsuit winds up trial.

High-profile Geoffrey Rush defamation case concluded yesterday.

Justice Michael Wigney will hand down his decision in early 2019.

Yesterday the court heard Rush earned $128,000 a month before stories were published in the Daily Telegraph.

Rush’s barrister, Bruce McClintock SC, said there is a significant risk he will never work again, and if he does, it will probably be more than 18 months after the judge makes a decision on the case.

“I ask your honour to award substantial damages,” McClintock said.

Tom Blackburn SC, for the newspaper and journalist Jonathan Moran, said “millions of dollars” were being claimed by Rush but added that the actor had not given evidence that he could not work.

Justice Michael Wigney said he would “love to start writing his judgment tomorrow” but his workload precluded him delivering the decision this year.
