Cricket helps Seven to second summer week

Ratings: Carols by Candlelight tops the week. Problems continue with 10's summer scheduling.

Seven secured its second week in summer (non) ratings thanks largely to its News, and Cricket coverage at up to 858,000 viewers. But newcomer 7Food has been a modest performer so far.

At just 120,000 Nine’s first tennis broadcast the Hopman Cup is no indication of where it will finish with the Australian Open.

No surprises that Carols by Candlelight topped the week at 1.02m viewers. Last year Nine made the mistake of not logging a repeat with OzTAM and dragging the numbers down. It didn’t make that mistake again.

Pencil in ABC NYE coverage to top this coming week.

Summer continues to be problematic at 10, which had a second consecutive week where every night was beaten by ABC. At 13.1% the share was even lower than last week’s 14.7%. Double ouch.

  1. The Hopman Cup is never going to rate well. It’s on during when people are away and the afternoon matches are usually irrelevant because there’s only a couple of teams that can make the final. They put Switzerland (Federer) and Australia’s matches in the evening, but they start at 8:30pm on the East Coast and rus till 1am or 2am with 20 or more minutes of filling in between games because there’s only one court in action. So the average over 5+ hours is always going to be tiny up against the BBL. TA effectively throw it in with AO rights so Nine don’t care.

  2. 10 should have ready to launch new shows early Jan. Get the jump on the competition with new programs and programming. They need to re-invent Peach with a new line up plus define Bold more into more C&I programs. Bold can be the TV Hits on FTA.

    1. I don’t think the old logic of getting in early before the competition is a valid point anymore. Sure people will try it out because nothing else is on…..high ratings to start but then dive bomb shortly after.

      1. With the exception of sport, Australians are used to tv being a wasteland in January. It’ll take a lot of time and money for ten to change that.
Who the heck wants to sit home in the middle of January and watch d-listers eating bugs in Africa anyway?

  3. I’m enjoying Nines coverage of the Hopman Cup actually! Not surprised it’s rating poorly to begin with, the cricket is too much competition and quicker playing.

      1. Also doesn’t help the cause for 7Food that Foxtel hasn’t put the new channel in for mapping to iQ3/iQ4 units with FTA tuners yet.

The Foxtel/7Food issue is something for David to look into in the new year…
