Eddie McGuire today confirmed he and Sam Newman The Footy Show will appear on 4 specials in 2019, with new hosts for Nine’s revamped weekly AFL entertainment show.
“We’re going to have a completely new format next year,” McGuire said on Triple M.
“We’re going to have an expanded Footy Show format.
“It will be a completely new take on what footy shows need to be going forward.”
Nine is yet to confirm the name for its weekly edition.
McGuire told Nine’s Today, “We will then have another show that will be on a Wednesday or Thursday night, depending what is happening in the football world,” he said, of the shows he won’t be involved with.
“That will be a new show. New hosts, new people. Sam may be going in between both of them. But I won’t be hosting that show, but I will be hosting the specials.
“Then Sam, of course, will also be involved in the extended Sunday Footy Show on the Sunday morning with some of his great head-to-head interviews and that type of thing.”
Newman is understood to have signed a multi-year deal to remain with the network.
Nine’s Head of Content, Production and Development, Adrian Swift recently told TV Tonight, “The question we are facing is how do we re-engage people with a brand that we are not going to just throw away after 26 years? We still think there is a huge appetite in Perth, Adelaide & Melbourne for a good AFL-based entertainment show and we are going to come back stronger than ever in 2019.”
He confirmed Eddie’s production company would produce the new-look show.
“I’ve got no problem with the production company. Jam TV will make it and Eddie’s involved.”
