Nine dumps Karl Stefanovic from Today

“Nine & Karl Stefanovic have agreed it is time for him to step off the Today Show."

Karl Stefanovic has been dumped from Today after 14 years as host.

He will remain with Nine as host of This Time Next Year.

The news follows low ratings, 2 years of headlines around his personal life, and the exit of brother Peter Stefanovic yesterday.

Darren Wick, Director of News and Current Affairs said, “Nine and Karl Stefanovic have agreed it is time for him to step off the Today show. Karl remains on contract with the network and will continue to host This Time Next Year, which records in February.

“For over 14 years Karl has been at the centre of the Today Show bringing his unique personality and perspective to the day’s news and current affairs.”

Karl Stefanovic said: “For the last 14 years I’ve co-hosted the best show on television. I can’t thank Nine enough for the opportunity. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be good enough to host this grand show for so long.

“Thanks to our viewers mostly, you are what matters most. It’s been a tough time. Thanks for hanging in there. I look forward to seeing you in another capacity at this great Network soon.”

Today is under review by incoming executive producer Steve Burling, amid suggestions other names could go. Media is speculating about Richard Wilkins, Sylvia Jeffreys and Tim Gilbert, although Nine has denied some reportage.

“An announcement on the new line up and format of the Today show will be made in the coming weeks,” said Wick.

  1. I can’t believe all this drivel, ok some like , some don’t , but guys , he hasn’t died , he hasn’t gone anywhere . He will be all over our screens for years to come . I’m more worried about other guys over the top botox. See you soon karl. Keep your chin up, we all have at least one skeleton, but everyone knows your fortays well.

  2. I noticed yesterday that Kochie was back on Sunrise, I wonder if this was a ploy to show the tv world our leading male host is here. I swear he wasn’t due back on air until after Christmas. He said so a few weeks ago when Sam and the others wished him a merry Christmas and said see you after.

    1. Well he probably knew he wouldn’t be seeing Sam and Beretts until after Christmas. I think he has another break in January as he recently said In an interview he is going overseas in January to celebrate his 40th anniversary. It did seem strange that he suddenly reappeared on Sunrise days out from Christmas wasn’t expecting to see him until late January but wouldn’t read too much into it. Sunrise team hosting Carols in Sydney Saturday.

  3. Well I know I’m in the minority but I like Karl & will miss him. Be interesting to see who they replace him with. It’s a shame it was announced while he was off air. Would have liked him to announce it & have a tribute to him like they usually do for someone who leaves after all those years. Would be nice if he could come back for one show & get a proper farewell. It’s the least they could do after 14 years.

  4. “Ratings for Today have been trailing [Seven Network’s] Sunrise across the year and even, on occasion, hit 12-year lows,” said David Knox of the website TV Tonight, which covers the industry and collates ratings.
Mr Knox said Stefanovic excelled at the juggling act of breakfast television, able to switch from serious news to light-hearted fare, but that the endless headlines about his personal life meant “he had become a liability for Today”………….Source:ABC News

  5. I watched The Today Show (USA) on the day after Matt Lauer was axed. Tomorrow, i’m going to watch The Today Show on the day after Karl Stefanovic was axed to see how they will address his axing and possibly the future for the show, Hopefully the team will return with words of farewell just like they did for Lisa but who knows.
