Doctor Who has been renewed for a 12th (modern) season with Jodi Whittaker returning.
But the series will not return until 2020.
“We’re off again! Well we never actually stopped,” showrunner Chris Chibnall said in a statement. “As Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends have been winning the hearts of families across the nation this autumn, we’ve been busy with a whole new set of action packed adventures for the 13th Doctor.”
Chibnall also confirmed that Whittaker’s three companions would also be returning, adding: “We adore making this show and have been blown away by the response from audiences, so we can’t wait to bring more scares, more monsters and more Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole to BBC One. Brilliant!”
A festive special will screen on January 2 on ABC.

Renewed and hopefully retooled. This has been the worst series since the 2005 relaunch.
First Yay for another series, just a shame we have such a long wait for more. I do hope why have a xMas/New Year special in a year, maybe NYD 2020? I did like we got all new monsters in S11 but I really hope we get some old favs in S12.
Any idea David why they are taking a year off??
It’s actually not a year off, it takes about a year to make, like a feature film or 2. We see the same for GoT and Westworld etc. Production will begin in the new year.
They have a made a series every year except for 2009 when they took a year of because of Moffat and Gatiss’s commitments and 6 months off in 2016. S12 was announced by the production company as being in production for 2019 6 weeks ago. Then nothing was heard and rumours of problems with writing and Whittaker leaving began circulating. 3 Days ago the BBC put out tweet saying it would be delayed till 2020 and Whittaker was staying. They are taking some unstated amount time off now, hopefully to fix things.
A year off is going to kill the momentum once again just as it did with the Capaldi era.
I haven’t watched myself, but according to my Youtube feed, bringing Jodie back is scaring more people than anything else could.
In fairness Jodie Whittaker did have a tough job ahead of her especially if the BBC wanted to make the show more appealing to an international market especially in the USA, if that is the case it may have been a better idea to have found an actress with a Mid Atlantic accent rather than coming from Yorkshire, the American’s are notorious for not understanding accents and will want subtitles.
According to my YouTube feed apparently I am interested in high performance tires (I can’t drive), and support Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party (I freakin’ won’t!)
