Returning: Luther

Idris Elba drama is on BBC First a month after it returns in the UK.

Season 5 of Luther, starring Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson, will screen on BBC First from early February.

The 4 part series by writer Neil Cross will debut in the UK on January 1, which looks like we are in for another year of slow-tracking from BBC First.

BBC First is not Foxtel-owned but as a premium drama channel this needs improvement in 2019.

When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther once again confronts the depths of human depravity.

As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther faces the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect, and who to sacrifice.

Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and will change John Luther forever.

Directed by Sam Miller (Cardiac Arrest, The Life) the series also stars Wunmi Mosaku (The End of the F**king World, Vera, Dancing on the Edge) who joins the cast as Luther’s sidekick Catherine Halliday, Hermione Norris (Cold Feet, Spooks), Patrick Malahide (Game of Thrones) and Dermot Crowley (Stars Wars: Return of the Jedi).

Sundays at 8.30pm from February 3 on BBC First.

  1. I’m guessing their excuse is that there are not enough hours in the evening or is it that the BBC will broadcast all 4 episodes over 4 days … Jan 1 to Jan 4 and that doesn’t match BBC First’s idea of broadcasting? Guess we’ll never know.

Besides Luther, January 2019 sees the return of: Father Brown, Silent Witness, Death in Paradise and Grantchester, to name but a few.

Of these, only Death in Paradise was shown on BBC First the following day, Silent Witness was delayed by at least 1 week, maybe 2.

Oh well, not sure it matters since BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub are 2 of the Best TV “channels” on the planet!!!!
