Airdate: Camping

New HBO comedy with Jennifer Garner & David Tennant comes to FOX Showcase.

Next week FOX Showcase debuts new HBO comedy Camping based on the UK series of the same name.

It stars Jennifer Garner as a wife throwing a “back to nature” camping weekend in honour of the 45th birthday of her husband (David Tennant). It includes a long list of guests & supporting stars including Juliette Lewis, Chris Sullivan, Nicole Richie, Busy Philipps and more.

From executive producers Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner (Girls), this screened in the US in October.

What should be a relaxing celebration in the wilderness becomes a test of friendships and marriages when Kathryn, her meek sister Carleen (Ione Skye), holier-than-thou ex-best friend Nina-Joy (Janicza Bravo), and free-spirited tagalong Jandice (Juliette Lewis) arrive, along with others, at the campground. Despite (or maybe because of) Kathryn’s best efforts, the weekend morphs into a series of arguments, confessions, animal intrusions, emergency-room visits, and woman-on-woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten.

Along for the ride in this darkly funny eight-episode comedy are Walt’s best friend George (Bret Gelman), Nina-Joy’s husband, whose happy-go-lucky façade hides some barely repressed rage; Walt’s recently separated friend Miguel (Arturo Del Puerto), who’s smack dab in the middle of a midlife crisis; and Carleen’s recovering addict boyfriend who’s inching progressively closer to self-destruction.

Tuesday February 5 at 8pm on FOX Showcase.

  1. Avoid like the plague. This is an absolute dog which was the worst reviewed TV show last year in the US. The creators fell out during filming, a lot ended up being improv, the edgy dark humour of the Julia Davis original was taken out and apart from Juliette Lewis, the cast are uniformly awful, with David Tennant’s risible American accent making a reappearance. Seek out the UK original.
