Nine scores week with Australian Open

Ratings: I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here tops the week and lifts 10 share.

Nine’s first ever week of the Australian Open has helped it to claim another week in summer.

Nine won every night except Sunday, which went to Seven, plus victory in 4 cities, with Perth still loyal to Seven.

But the tennis is yet to outrank 10’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here which topped the week on opening night at 1.1m viewers. The best tennis crowd last week was 791,000 on Friday.

10 enjoyed a lift overall, including beating Nine in network share on Sunday.

  1. No matter how many times I tell myself “the tennis is now on Nine” I still keep on putting in 107 on my Foxtel remote or “70” on my free to air remote to go and watch some tennis or see how it is going.

As for Big Bash – haven’t watched any this year (have in the past) and confused as to what is on FTA TV, what isn’t and when anyone is actually playing – it is allover the place now so have lost interest. Previous years, as commented already, there was a match every night (except Xmas) and it was easy to follow what was happening.

Although I have Foxtel, cannot justify $25 per month (and then $10 for HD on top) for sports package when any given time of year there’s only one sport or a few games I want to watch. If only they’d break it down..

      1. Channel nine is OK, but not as good as Seven for the tennis. Some of the commentators are great, but others not, and there are too many non-Australian ones.

  2. Agree, MKR will be extended well beyond Married & Celebrity to pick up lost ratings as per last season.
Smart programming from 9 + 10 can put an end to 7’s painful extension of MKR.

  3. It seems that BBL has gone off a bit this year. Ratings on FTA and attendances at games are lower than last year. Will need to be some changes next year for the broadcasters to make something out of it! Tennis seems to be holding its own at the moment.

    1. The hit-and-miss tv coverage must play a part. We have been used to having a game every night, but now the weekends are barren, and it breaks the summertime rhythm and persuades you back to tennis, A-League or non-sport shows.

      1. Nines decision to invest in tennis is proving correct especially for the start of the sporting year. Cricket has gone through various changes, moving from Test Cricket to the 40 over game to the franchise 20 over game which seems to be the money earner at the moment for Cricket Australia especially for broadcast rights, even so I doubt having a BBL game every day is a viable business plan especially in a small populated country with a fluctuating fan base, there’s nothing worse than showing empty stadiums as has been the case for the womans version of the BBL franchise.

        1. I don’t really notice the crowd (or lack of it) – in fact I prefer a quiet crowd to the BBL ones that have been artificially whipped up. Certainly the two women’s semi’s on Saturday were the best ever T20 games I have seen, and worthy of huge audiences.

  4. Hope TEN can follow through with the success of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, that was there biggest problem last year having shows to continue on with when others finished like this and Masterchef finished. I know they have Dancing With The Stars coming up and with CBS having the US version it could turn out quite well, Free To Air TV needs a 3rd commercial to do well, help shake things up a bit and make 7 and 9 think about their offerings more (putting MKR at 7pm is a sign it’s already happening).

TENBold has gone in leaps and bounds as well, with CSI: Miami and The Mentalist coming in they look like they have the right idea of what is attracting people, if they can get the rights back to the original Law And Order, Criminal Intent and a few more shows they’ll be sitting pretty I think. Pity they’ll likely miss out on the new NYPD Blue seeing it’s an ABC and 20th Century…

      1. Tuesdays it’s 7:30pm NCIS, 8:30 and 9:30pm CSI: Miami, 10:130 and 11:30pm The Mentalist, from here on in it’s a good idea to keep an eye on an online TV Guide as TENBold is adding things a bit lately (US procedurals).
