Roma leads Oscars hunt

10 nominations for Netflix film including Best Picture, Director & Actress.

Netflix-produced movie Roma has been nominated for a swag of Academy Awards overnight, including a nod for Best Picture.

It scored 10 nominations, tying with The Favourite.

Director Alfonso Cuarón and star Yalitza Aparicio have been nominated in their respective categories, along with nominations in Original Screenplay, Foreign Film and several technical awards.

Marina de Tavira is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

The Mexican film will also have to fight off competition from films including A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, Black Panther and Vice.

Updated: Aussie screenwriter Tony McNamara (Doctor Doctor, Tangle, Puberty Blues) is nominated for The Favourite alongside designer Fiona Crombie.

The 91st Academy Awards will take place on Monday February 25, Australian time.

    1. I think everyone knows it doesn’t deserve the nomination for the quality of the film. It was good but there have been plenty of better superhero films and it wasn’t even the best superhero film of the year. It just really comes down to where you view the “cultural achievement” aspect of it and if you think that’s a good enough reason.
      Even in the many articles from the entertainment media saying it deserved it, it was all about the cultural moment over the quality of the film. Not being an American, or a black person. I have no idea how to even judge that. Was it really a massive big deal, was it hype, is it a narrative people have bought into. No idea.
