What I’ve Been Watching: Fiona Choi

The Family Law star is a fan of everything from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel to Castle Rock.

The Family Law returns for its final season on Saturday and star Fiona Choi shares her thoughts on watching everything from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel to Castle Rock.

What shows are on your must-see TV list lately?
FC: Sadly I’m twiddling my thumbs waiting for my favourite show The Good Fight to come back for a third season on SBS. But have found much joy in binge-watching The Marvelous Mrs Maisel – such fabulous writing, gorgeous production (the scenery, costumes & tracking shots are breathtaking), and that soundtrack! My husband and I are also introducing our boys to Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Simpsons, and finding the jokes and references still crack us up just as much. And cannot wait to find a way to binge This Is Us from the beginning.

2. What’s your preferred genre to watch and which shows are current highlights?
FC: Anything that tells a compelling story and is written well. I love a great political or crime thriller like Bodyguard, Homeland or Counterpart on SBS On Demand. I also love character-driven shows that focus on the darker side of humanity – Castle Rock, Ozark, The Walking Dead. And I especially love it when a little humour is sprinkled into the tone as in Killing Eve or Better Call Saul.

3. Which guilty pleasure show are you reluctant to admit to watching?
FC: I was absolutely obsessed with Scandal – such high camp over-the-top drama, but oh so glamorous & sexy, and full of beautiful-looking people you love to love and love to hate. Felt the same way about Suits. Looking for my next guilty pleasure.

4. What show you would secretly love to appear on?
FC: Well I’ve always been a huge fan of Wentworth, and now they’ve announced they’re coming back for a few more seasons, my secret dream of getting to wear that teal tracksuit lives on J

5. As a viewer what’s the best and worst thing about watching Australian Television lately?
FC: I think Australia is really nailing scripted comedy at the moment, especially at the ABC with The Letdown, Rosehaven, Utopia, Get Krack!n – aside from the brilliant writing there’s a real charm and a light touch – the comedy isn’t bashing you over the head, but inviting you into a delightful world. I do wish there was even more diversity on the commercial channels – I applaud the changes that are already happening, and look forward to scripted shows that continue to reflect the multicultural fabric of our towns & cities.

6. What can we expect to see for Jenny and Benjamin in the final season of The Family Law?
FC: The final season is all about sexual discovery for both Jenny and Ben. It’s a pretty open secret where Ben’s journey leads him, and that rocky road plays out beautifully with many obstacles along the way. Jenny also has a wonderfully fraught journey discovering she can be seen as an object of desire after all these years: drunken girl’s night out & internet dating leads to a hilarious & often touching teen-style romance. And with the handsome Jeremy Lindsay-Taylor, no less! But as with previous seasons, the mother-son BFF ‘bondage’ sees them through.

The Family Law airs 8:30pm Saturday on SBS / SBS VICELAND.
