Axed: Jessica Jones, The Punisher.

Marvel shows are ending on Netflix, ahead of Disney's planned streaming service.

Netflix has axed the last of its Marvel shows, Jessica Jones and The Punisher, ahead of Disney’s planned streaming service later this year. Disney is Marvel’s parent company.

Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter, ends with its upcoming third season while The Punisher with Jon Bernthal ends at 2 seasons. They join the previously-cancelled Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders.

Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Netflix confirmed. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.

“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” Netflix added. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognised by the Peabody Awards among many others.

“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

New and and old Marvel content are set to be a big component of the upcoming Disney+ streaming service, which is yet to be confirmed for Australia.

  1. I think these shows are going to end up on Hulu. Disney have said that Disney+ will be family friendly and Hulu will be used for their more mature content.

  2. Be interesting to see what happens when the clause that doesn’t allow those characters to appear in any non-Netflix shows or movies for a full two years after the shows are cancelled runs out. Meaning Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil can’t come back until late 2020, while Jessica Jones and Punisher can’t come back until this time 2021. As that may fit Disney’s plan well with when they end up with majority ownership of Hulu and the plans of Disney CEO Bob Iger to take Hulu International, with Family Entertainment on Disney+ and more adult orientated material on Hulu.

    1. We will have to wait and see wont we, even if these Marvel characters make a return it may be in a re-imagined form so the Netflix actors may not reprise their roles, perhaps they could become an animation instead. There has to be lesson here about ownership of creative content especially as Marvel have had a great run of success before Disney decided to control things for it’s own commercial purposes, Marvel is one product that has thrived by being broadcast from various sources so Netflix’s limited content was never going to be a real competitive threat in the long term.

      1. Plus with Disney buying 21st Century Fox that means they’ll own FX the station that has been showing Legion, of course Fox has The Gifted along with Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D being on ABC which is also part of Disney and Cloak and Dagger on Freeform (Disney/ABC). So they can spread shows on their own platforms now and work out which ones are suited in style to each Network, as they said with Legion ending they hope to work with Noah Hawley and FX have recently picked up Y: The Last Man, so yeah with Hulu having The Runaways Marvel can be everywhere all under Disney owned.
