Foxtel to offer IQ with Netflix?

Subscription TV & Streaming companies have been holding talks.

There are reports Foxtel has held talks with Netflix to incorporate the streaming giant into its IQ boxes.

Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany has been developing plans for Foxtel to become a “mega-aggregator” of content across sport, movies and drama.

In November Britain’s SKY TV began offering subscribers an integrated service that puts Netflix films and television series alongside its own shows.

The Australian suggests a deal could be announced later this year.

Delany has confirmed the companies have established a relationship, but declined to elaborate.

Meanwhile a rumoured stand-alone streaming platform for Drama, similar to Kayo Sports, could come as early as April, timed with the Game of Thrones final season.

  1. Can the IQ4 box actually run apps like Netflix?

I reckon they won’t for one simple reason. Netflix’s picture quality is much better than Foxtel. Do they really want to make everyone who isn’t, aware of this.

  2. I’ve dropped Foxtel after having them for 10 or so years… HD was weak… programming not the fastest and IQ2 showed its age with IQ3 and now 4 not interesting. Have jumped to Apple TV and am not looking back! I would say, Hulu and Amazon are awesome, if Foxtel had an app on Apple TV then sign me back up (All in HD please), but none of this silly small amout of channels available with their Foxtel Now unit… Yawn.

  3. I wonder how long the Foxtel IQ box will continue as VOD streaming apps gain more of the market and Foxtels competitors like Telstra and Optus further diversify their own VOD services so they can be bundled with their NBN sales promotions. After years of FTA trying to hold pay TV at bay, and all the fear campaigns against piracy there’s an irony that a giant tech company called Netflix has converted the viewing habits of the masses so effectively.

    1. Hence Kayo Sports, the IQ4 4K satellite system, Foxtel Now and Foxtel not renewing their lease on the Telstra cable which expires in few years. But they don’t want to cannibalise their existing business before they have too. This was rumoured in the media before, as a way to tie Foxtel users who also want Netflix to their platform. Seem too late to bother with it now.

  4. Netflix has a similar deal with Comcast in the U.S where subscribers can access their Netflix subscription on their cable box. It’s a cool and convenient idea that works for both sides.

    1. According to the story, internationally yes. Wentworth already screens on Netflix US. Its easy enough to access with a Netflix subscription.

Last year Foxtel did a survey with some customers on future packages they were considering including ones that included Netflix so this is not a surprise.
