Reboots, revivals, rumours: The L Word, Party of Five, 90210, Gossip Girl

An update on well-known brands returning (and one that isn't).

An update on a number of former brands that are on the return path (and one that isn’t).

The L Word

Rumours about a revival have been around for some time but last week it was confirmed 8 new episodes have been ordered by Showtime. Stars Jennifer Beals (Bette), Katherine Moennig (Shane) and Leisha Hailey (Alice) will reprise their roles (and executive produce) while also introducing a new ensemble of self-possessed LGBTQIA characters experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success on the east side of Los Angeles. The good news is creator Ilene Chaiken set to executive produce, with playwright and screenwriter Marja-Lewis Ryan as showrunner. Stan is likely to have this title for Australia.

Party of Five
Also from the rumour camp, a rebooted Party of Five is now proceeding to series. The pilot made for Freeform centres around Mexican-American siblings and comes from original series’ creators Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman and studio Sony Pictures TV. The new take will follow the five Acosta children as they navigate daily life struggles to survive as a family unit after their parents are suddenly deported to Mexico. The series stars Brandon Larracuente as Emilio, Emily Tosta as Lucia, Niko Guardado as Beto and Elle Paris Legaspi as Valentina.

Beverly Hills 90210
Following recent rumours cast were reuniting Tori Spelling has confirmed a novel approach in which the cast would play heightened versions of themselves, mockumentary-style, whilst trying to mount a reboot behind the scenes. Fun! Most but not all of the principal cast are involved, expected later this year.

Gossip Girl
But it isn’t good news on more from Gossip Girl with The CW president Mark Pedowitz recently revealing that there has been discussion of a return. “The actors are all signed on to other projects,” an insider explained. “Chace Crawford is currently the star of the new Amazon Prime series The Boys, and Penn Badgley is going into the second season of Netflix’s You. Blake Lively is doing back-to-back movies.” Leighton Meester starring in Single Parents, Taylor Momsen pursuing a music career, while Ed Westwick has been the subject of allegations despite no charges being laid.

  1. The idea behind Beverly Hills 90210 sounds like a hoot, I remember a series called Grosse Pointe from 2000 made by Darren Star that was a mockumentary about the making of a show like Beverly Hills 90210 that was hilarious, hope this is a bit like that and hope Star is on-board.

      1. Yeah it was fantastic and probably a little ahead of it’s time and at least Star took the mickey out of himself in it too. Fair enough on the comedy call, probably just got that in my head because it was a behind the scenes thing and they had some stars of the time on it playing themselves (like Leslie Bibb, Carly Pope and Sarah Michelle Gellar). However yeah, it wasn’t about someone making a documentary about the making of a Soap, it was more in line with trying to get a show to air and those dramas a bit like Episodes in a small kind of way.
