Sci-fi is renewed for third season, at just six episodes into its second season.

Star Trek: Discovery has been renewed for a third season.

The announcement comes after just six episodes into the second season by CBS All Access.

Co-executive producer and writer Michelle Paradise (The Originals, Hart of Dixie) will also serve as co-showrunner alongside Alex Kurtzman.

“Michelle joined us midway through season two and energised the room with her ferocious knowledge of Trek,” Alex Kurtzman said. “Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the Trek legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward. I’m proud to say Michelle and I are officially running Star Trek: Discovery together.”

“The massive success of Star Trek: Discovery’s second season launch exceeded our expectations in both driving subscriber growth and generating a phenomenal response from Star Trek fans,” said Julie McNamara, executive vice president of original content for CBS All Access. “With Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise at the helm, we look forward to continuing Star Trek: Discovery’s journey, growing the Star Trek franchise on CBS All Access and bringing fans new Star Trek stories for many years to come.”

  1. Absolutely love this show. It’s embraced the existing mythology with respect yet has struck its own personality brilliantly. It’s a casting and writing triumph.

    1. I’ve been loving the inclusion of Anson Mount as Pike, we’re getting to see the life of Pike before he was confined to a life of beeps and bloops.

I would imagine that the decision to renew Star Trek Discovery was made before the release of season 2 as this complex production would have needed to be scheduled with the least delay to keep CGI costs manageable and expensive sets kept ready to use, not forgetting the need to keep the main actors signed up as well. Next season would not benefit from a prolonged wait as fans have high expectations nowadays, as shows like Stranger Things will know. I’m sure producers would like to get at least 4 seasons from ‘Discovery’ how season 2 finishes and Mr Spock’s role evolves could make or break season 3.

    1. It would have been assumed they were doing a new season. Especially seeing they’re developing a S31 spin off show and the Picard series. Announcing it probably allows access to the production money for season 3.
