10 confirms Grant Denyer back to 6pm

Celebrity Name Game at 6pm will signal the end for Pointless.

As tipped by TV Tonight, 10 has now confirmed Grant Denyer’s return to the 6pm timeslot with new game show Celebrity Name Game.

The announcement will signal the end of Pointless after months of disappointing numbers.

The Fremantle format sees both celebrities and punters tested on pop culture and parlour games, including mixing up teams. It aired in the US for three seasons from 2014, hosted by Craig Ferguson and produced by Courteney Cox & David Arquette.

Aussie celebs confirmed thus far include Yvie Jones and Angie Kent, Beau Ryan and Courtney Act but the show will feature many more.

10 is counting on the show to get a boost from broad, family appeal that Pointless does not enjoy.

An airdate is yet to be announced.

Celebrity Name Game is a new, fast-paced game show that will leave you on the edge of your seat, with the biggest names in pop culture on the tip of your tongue. True to Family Feud form, you’ll be left screaming the answers at the television and playing along from the comfort of your couch.

The most unpredictable game show on television, two teams of two contestants – think mum and son, best friends – call upon their favourite celebrity to help them win a supercharged game of charades in the hope of winning the $10,000 prize.

But, these teams need to be proficient in all things popular culture. You know, everything from movies, sports stars, politicians, pop stars and fictional characters.

From the Kardashians to KRudd, Conor McGregor to Cinderella and Juno to Julia Roberts, these teams will really need to know their stuff, with each correct answer adding to the teams’ cash prize kitty, with the last team standing in a 60 second all-or-nothing final round.

With the whole family playing along, teams also get help from some of Australia’s favourite celebrities including Jungle buddies Yvie Jones and Angie Kent, Chris & Julia’s Sunday Night Takeaway’s Beau Ryan and Dancing With The Stars’ Courtney Act.

So if you know your Kardashian’s from your Jenners, your Thorpe from your Turnbull, then this is the game for you!

  1. Re: all the comments about Neighbours on the main channel. I don’t think the producers would take too much persuading to let Ten give it a try. There really is nothing to lose from either side – as worse it doesn’t rate and stays on Peach, and at best is does the numbers and perhaps opens up a bigger budget down the line.

Ten obviously feel the 5pm news works for them and don’t think competing with Seven and Nine with news at 6pm would end well for them, not just at 6pm but also in having to compete with The Chase and Hotseat as well. The 6-7.30pm block is clearly hurting them now though throughout the evening.

They could do worse than Come Dine with Me at 6pm – looking at Wiki you had a local version on Lifestyle which ended in 2013. If you don’t know it’s a stripped show (running in the UK since 2005) where 5 contestants host a dinner party across a week and score each…

  2. David, is this show similar to The Celebrity Game hosted by Mike Preston back around 1976-77?
When I saw charades mentioned, that’s what came to my mind.

    1. Was a Bert Newton one of that in 1969 as well, didn’t mind The Celebrity Game myself, always up for a good game of Charades.

If you know the board Game: !dentity Crisis (their spelling not mine), that is what it is based on, think Celebrity Head meets Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation’s: Watch Your Mouth (minus the Mouth) and in teams so verbal.

      Urgh here: https://tvtonight.com.au/2018/08/auditions-celebrity-name-game.html

Honestly this would have been right up Shaun Micallef’s ally but guess he can’t have shows on 3 different channels and imagine the work load actually a pity that there can’t be a 5 day week 30 minute version of Thank God You’re Here, 6pm would be a good time for that.

  3. I wonder what 10 really thinks constitutes good ratings for an entertainment product in this timeslot? Full retention from the early news? Even that feels ambitious when you think about people’s behaviour patterns around dinner.

Surely they don’t actually expect to get within a bull’s roar of 7 and 9?

  4. I like the look of this but 5 nights a week is just too much. I already have too many shows on at that time. Should be on once a week for an hour.

  5. It’s not just 10. The ABC has tried light entertainment shows, Pointless UK, Think Tank, The Drum is rating <200k, they've done best with Grand Designs UK repeats. SBS hasn't down well with The Chef's Line and have gone back to endless repeats of Letter and Numbers. Fewer people are watching TV at 6pm and most of those who do watch 7 and 9 News and that isn't going to change. Ten will be hoping the Celebrity Name Game does better than Pointless but they don't have any other ideas.
