Documentary streaming platform iwonder launches

Streaming users get a dedicated service with docos & current affairs.

Another streaming platform, specialising in documentaries in current affairs, has launched.

iwonder previously launched to 15 million users via the iflix platform in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

From today, Australia and New Zealand viewers will have access to over 500 hours of content $6.99 per month, or $69.99 for an annual subscription.

Titles include the politically of-the-moment Alt-Right: Age of Rage doco; the rags to riches to rags story of a Perth rock band, Meal Tickets; a series about the founding of the iconic magazine Rolling Stone: Stories From The Edge; Ten Billion, a look at population explosion and the challenges we face because of it; and Wayne, the wild true story of the first Australian to win the World Motorcycle Grand Prix, Wayne Gardner.

iwonder co-founder and CEO, James Bridges was previously Foxtel’s head of content for On Demand and Presto.

“High-quality, engaging stories that give much deeper context into what is happening in the world today will be the bedrock of our service,” he said.

“For example, when students around the world continue to take to the streets to demand a response from world leaders on climate change later this month, iwonder will respond by featuring the news on our home page and pairing content which delves deeper into surrounding issues on climate, politics and activism. iwonder will always focus first on great storytelling that helps us understand more about our world and ourselves. We are passionate about connecting the best of the 30,000 or so documentaries produced each year, so many of which fly under the radar without Hollywood marketing budgets, to audiences that are increasingly migrating to streaming.”

New users will receive one month free. They can watch on their iOS and Android mobile and tablet via the app, on their browsers at http://www.iwonder.com, and on big screens via Chromecast or Airplay.

  1. Fascinating isn’t it that streaming is picking up the pace with more apps, there’s Britbox in the UK a team effort from the BBC and ITV and Motorsport.tv beginning also in Europe, both of these apps could become available in Australia which will put more pressure on FTA channels, it’s also setting a trend which could mean an entertainment overload in the foreseeable future and a headache for viewers finding out who owns current broadcast rights.
