Netflix is set to test cheaper, mobile-only subscription plans in India, following tests in Malaysia and other territories last November.
Priced at 250 rupees per month (AU$5.10), the mobile-only plan is half of what Netflix’s basic plan costs at 500 rupees (AU$10.20).
A Netflix spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that “we will be testing different options in select countries, where members can, for example, watch Netflix on their mobile device for a lower price and subscribe in shorter increments of time.”
But while not everyone will see these options, they remain tests only.
Netflix says it may never roll out these specific plans beyond the tests.

Don’t forget that because of the diversity of India’s massive population many thousands find ways of getting things for free, especially pay TV, Netflix are being shrewd and look to be targeting the large market on offer from middle class consumers especially the young who like in Australia spend a lot of their travel time watching movies and binging shows on their phones.
Chromecast in Hindi is pronounced “chhromaichast”. Smartphone to TV for half the price!
India has the cheapest mobile data in world.
As someone who gets severe motion sickness even glancing more than a few seconds at my phone on the bus I am jealous of those who can watch shows on the move.
