Returning: The Directors

Foxtel Arts series returns with profiles on David Lean, Michael Curtiz, John Ford & John Huston.

Season 2 of The Directors begins next week on Foxtel Arts, kicking off with an episode on David Lean.

This new series looks at more iconic film directors whose breakthrough direction from their early lives, often-escaping war or poverty but who found expression in theatre, then film.

Here are the first 4 episodes in the 10 part series:

Wednesday April 3 at 7.30pm – David Lean
Sir David Lean, the British the two time Academy Award winning director is best known for his extraordinary cinematic epics, The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and Passage to India (1984).

Wednesday April 10 at 7.30pm – Michael Curtiz
Michael Curtiz helped popularize the classic swashbuckler with Captain Blood (1935) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). He directed many dramas classics such as Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), and Mildred Pierce (1945)

Wednesday April 17 at 7.30pm – John Ford
John Ford, is known for his visually powerful westerns, with his characters framed against America’s stunning natural landmarks. Stagecoach (1939) and the highly regarded and hugely influential The Searchers(1956)

Wednesday April 24 at 7.30pm – John Huston
John Huston wrote most of the films he directed, many of which are today considered classics. He is remembered for his collaboration with Humphrey Bogart, which brought to screen The Maltese Falcon (1941), Key Largo (1948)
