Tom Long in the fight of his life

Seachange and The Dish star reveals he has been battling terminal blood cancer.

Actor Tom Long is in the fight of his life -literally- after revealing to The Sunday Project he has been battling a type of blood cancer.

Long, best known for The Dish and Seachange, collapsed on stage in 2012 and has not performed since. After being treated for multiple myeloma, he was given just 2 -3 years to live.

With support from his family and doctors, he has applied chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants and natural therapies.

But in December he was given just 3 – 12 months to live. He told Lisa Wilkinson his doctor was putting him in a US trial.

“My chances elsewhere are not that good, so I don’t really have a choice,” he said.

“I’m very aware that I could be taken any time. But it’s the hope, I think. I go for hope.”

On Thursday Long heads to the US for 12 days of treatment that will harvest his T-cells, and “reboot” his immune system, in he hope it will attack the cancer.

  1. One of my favourite Seachange actors. America has some serious problems, but world-class research is not one of them. We’ll be hoping for the best news from the treatment overseas.

  2. Oh, so very sorry….I really like this young man….I hope he finds his miracle…tough road he has been on from what you have written….

  3. This was so sad to learn. It was weird he was everywhere (movies and TV) and just dropped out of sight all of a sudden. I thought he’d just moved away from the industry to try something else (as many actors did in the mid to late 00’s). I wish him all the best.

  4. This news made me incredibly sad. I wish Tom and his family all the best for the road they are travelling.
Tom worked his way into our lives and hearts through some wonderful roles and I hope he knows how loved those characters were and still are.
