Cate Blanchett drama Stateless to begin filming in June

Upcoming high-end drama series Stateless which has Cate Blanchett attached as an executive producer will begin filming from June, in Port Augusta, Adelaide and Indonesia.
The Matchbox Pictures series was first mooted in 2015, and centres on the true story of Cornelia Rau who made headlines in 2004.
Described as a powerful and timely series about belonging and identity, Stateless is the story of four strangers whose lives collide at a refugee detention centre in the middle of the Australian desert.
It isn’t clear if Blanchett will take on one of the key roles.
Acclaimed producer Tony Ayres, Elise McCredie & Liz Watts also executive produce with Emma Freeman (Glitch, Offspring) & Jocelyn Moorhouse (The Dressmaker) directing. When the project received Screen Australia development funding, Blanchett was announced as making her TV directing debut.
Casting is currently underway for Afghan girls aged 7-13 who speak Dari and English for two roles.
A network is yet to be announced for the show.

This could end up on SVOD (you would think will be Netflix) but the ABC or the SBS might get the Australian broadcast rights first. Personally I think Cate Blanchett is well suited to do more TV (small screen) work, it’s now a growth market after all, although I suspect she is revealing part of her political self in making ‘Stateless’.

I hope it’s tided to the ABC or SBS. I can’t imagine the story suits the commercial networks IMO.
