Local council marks Graham Kennedy’s childhood home

This unassuming Melbourne house was last week given a permanent plaque to remember it as the childhood home of the King of TV, Graham Kennedy.

The small red brick duplex at 32 Nelson Street Balaclava is perched between a railway line and a local car park.

It was Kennedy’s home for around 17 years, living with his mother and grandparents, right up to the period when he began at In Melbourne Tonight in Richmond.

He would later go on to more palatial homes in Frankston, Kirribilli and Bowral, amongst others.

Kennedy died in 2005 aged 71, later posthumously appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

  1. Hi David, bit strange the council are announcing this now as there has been a permanent plague for this on the front lawn of the house for years. I first saw it back around 2007 or 2008. I can’t remember exactly when it was installed, but it may have been just after Graham Kennedy passed away. I grew up in the area myself.

      1. I grew up in the Frankston area. At the time Graham lived there his Frankston home actually was considered as ‘palatial’. My father was a local builder and quite often when we drove down Oliver’s Hill Dad would point out his house. He was impressed by it’s architectural design. It’s recently been renovated and looks amazing. I remember too Dad was concerned that the area it’s built on is prone to landslides. Graham’s driveway had actually slipped down the hill one day while he was on air from his at home studio. Dad would watch new homes being built on the side of the cliff and remark there’s no way he want to work or live there. Let’s hope Graham’s old ‘palatial’ home never suffers that fate.
