Queen tops MAX 1000 Greatest Songs of All Time (again)

Queen classic tops the MAX countdown for the third time.

MAX may have to stop running its music lists at this rate, or at least come up with a new angle…

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody has topped its 1000 Greatest Songs of All Time for the third time. It also topped lists in 2017 & 2013. No doubt the movie has helped it draw even more votes.

The list, determined using viewer votes, industry experts and chart ratings was hosted by Amanda Keller and Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones over the Easter long weekend. There are some limitations to “All Time” excluding many pre-music video songs.

Queen had 12 song entries in the countdown. U2 polled with the most entries with 15 songs, followed by AC/DC with 14 song entries, INXS and Madonna with 13 and The Rolling Stones.

The Max 1000 Greatest Songs of All Time Top 10:

1. “Bohemian Rhapsody” Queen
2. “Imagine” John Lennon
3. “Livin’ On A Prayer” Bon Jovi
4. “Thriller” Michael Jackson
5. “It’s A Long Way To The Top” AC/DC
6. “Sweet Child O’ Mine” Guns N’ Roses
7. “Stairway To Heaven” Led Zeppelin
8. “Like A Prayer” Madonna
9. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Nirvana
10. “Purple Rain” Prince & The Revolution

397 artists had only one entry in the countdown and 186 entries were Australian artists/bands with the newest song being “Shallow” By Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper and the oldest Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock”.

Music from the 1980s flooded the countdown with 37 percent of the songs, closely followed by the 1990s with 24 percent.

  1. Interestingly Purple Rain only managed to get to #41 on the charts in Australia on its 1984 release. But When Doves Cry – the first single off the album – made it to #1. Yet in hindsight it’s Purple Rain that gets more love. (although when doves cry is still a great song)

  2. It sounds a bit like what happened with Triple J’s Top 100 in the 1990s. Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division kept topping the chart each year so they changed the rules to only allow songs released in the previous five years to be nominated.
