Smallville actress pleads guilty in cult case charges

Allison Mack pleads guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges.

US actress Allison Mack, who played Clark Kent’s confidant Chloe in Smallville, has pleaded guilty to blackmailing two women as part of an alleged New York sex cult.

Mack, 36, was arrested last April on charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit forced labour. She is accused of recruiting women into a secret society known as NXIVM, led by self-help guru Keith Raniere. But US authorities allege it is a sex cult, charging both with multiple counts.

She entered her plea to racketeering and conspiracy charges before a federal court in Brooklyn, New York, admitting that she coerced the two unnamed women into performing services by threatening to release damaging information about them.

Fighting back tears, Mack said she had joined the organisation, led by Raniere, a decade ago to find purpose in life.

“Through it all, I believed that Keith Raniere’s intentions were to help people,” she said.

“I was wrong. I now realise that I and others engaged in criminal conduct.”

There has been no mention yet of any agreement for Mack to assist prosecutors in their case against Raniere.

Raniere, 58, is currently being held without bail and is expected to go on trial next month.

Mack appeared in Smallville across 9 seasons. She also played played Amanda, the love interest of Elijah Wood’s character Ryan on the US adaptation of Wilfred.
