The European Broadcasting Union this week revealed the three shows in the Eurovision Song Contest reached a global audience of 182 million people, securing its place as the world’s most-viewed live music event.
‘Reach’ in ratings language means anybody who watched for at least 1 minute.
The figure is down by 4 million on 2018, staged in Portugal, and is the lowest audience since 2013.
Eurovision drew 40 million unique viewers on YouTube from 225 territories, three-quarters of whom were under 35. There were also 5 million engagements on the Eurovision official social media accounts with 70% of those on Instagram.
An average of 4.5 million viewers watched the Grand Final in the Netherlands, where Duncan Laurence was the favourite and eventual winner.
In Australia it drew 246,000 as a primetime replay for SBS. In the morning it averaged 166,000 Live with 240,000 for the Winner Announced.
2020 Dutch public broadcasters NPO, AVROTROS and NOS are officially kicking off the process to lockdown the next host city.
The Netherlands has hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 4 times before: in 1958, 1970, 1976 and 1980. While Amsterdam is not the favourite of the Dutch tourism board, we can also rule out The Hague right now, due to a May clash with Invictus Games.
In mid-July, organisers will visit the cities and regions that have applied.
