CBS sells next Star Trek series to Amazon Prime

10 All Access misses out on new series with Patrick Stewart, in a surprise win for Amazon Prime.

This one is a bit of a surprise….

CBS All Access has made a deal for the new Star Trek series with Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard to screen on Amazon Prime Video.

The new series, which follows the next chapter of Picard’s life, will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.

The surprise news comes despite CBS looking to build its new streaming service 10 All Access in Australia, where its exclusive titles are already few and far between. Star Trek: Discovery, meanwhile, screens via Netflix where it began before 10 All Access was ever contemplated.

The joint announcement was made today by CBS Studios International and Amazon Prime Video.

The series will also star Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful), Isa Briones (American Crime Story: Versace), Santiago Cabrera (Salvation), Michelle Hurd (Blindspot) and nwcomer Evan Evagora.

“There’s only one word that can begin to describe Sir Patrick Stewart as Starship Commander Jean-Luc Picard, and that’s ‘legendary,’” said series executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “We are thrilled beyond measure to have him back in command, bringing the optimistic messages of Star Trek to audiences around the world.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with CBS to bring the newest edition of the storied Star Trek franchise to our international Amazon Prime Video customers,” said Brad Beale, Vice President, Worldwide Content Licensing for Amazon Prime Video. “With the incredible Sir Patrick Stewart returning as the beloved Jean-Luc Picard, we’re excited we can give Trek fans both old and new the opportunity to see him back in action. It’s a terrific addition to our already robust catalogue of exclusive Amazon Prime Video content.”

“For 50 years, the Star Trek series has been a global sensation, spanning generations and audiences of all ages. It’s an honour to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back for what is sure to be another world-class extension of the historic franchise,” said Armando Nuñez, President and Chief Executive Officer, CBS Global Distribution Group. “We look forward to working with the team at Amazon Prime Video to bring this next chapter of the incredible Star Trek franchise to its passionate international fan base.”

The show is rumoured to premiere in late 2019, and consist of 10 episodes.

The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, James Duff, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers and Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout) will serve as co-executive producer and Kirsten Beyer will serve as supervising producer.

    That is the kiss of death for 10Access…..

  2. This is annoying. I’ve wanted an excuse to try out 10 All Access (they have Cheers which I like) but Amazon??? We tried oooh the free trial last year and it was their ”original series’ (seriously who cares) and then pages upon pages of YouTube also-rans and the depressing public domain cartoons you’d see in the DVD aisle of the reject shop

    It is a pitiful excuse for a streaming service

  3. I recently subscribed to Amazon Prime. It’s not a bad deal, if you sign up upfront for 12 months, it is less than $5 a month. For that you get the streaming TV service, streaming music service, ebooks, plus the free delivery on Amazon’s shopping service. So far I have saved at least $20 on shipping, so it’s paying off. The TV service is pretty low on decent first run content, but I’m at least enjoying rewatching Monk in HD, especially after how badly 10 treated this show.

  4. Considering the poorly written mess that Discovery turned into, I’m not that keen on watching it anyway.
    The writers clearly never watched much Star Trek, let alone understood it.

  5. Was actually hoping that 10 All Access would get this so I would have a reason to subscribe. I could then watch The Twilight Zone as well. Oh well. At least Amazon Prime is cheap.

  9. He was my favourite Captain, so very happy to have him back on my TV screen. Would have preferred it was Netflix, but I guess I’ll be giving Amazon a go at some stage then.

Fascinating, as Spock would say, this ‘Picard’ spin-off show could have fitted nicely with ‘Discovery’ on Netflix, but Amazon Prime does need some new sci-fi attractions so Picard might provide a month or two of new subscribers who knows. Personally I think CBS may have done Picard a disservice not showing it on Netflix but then again the way the expanding streaming business is going at the moment perhaps CBS is looking at a future business deal with Amazon Prime.
