Footy Classified, Sunday Footy Show now outrate The Footy Show…

Does the answer to Nine's footy show woes lay in its other titles?

Nine’s Footy Classified and the Sunday Footy Show now rate higher than the failed Footy Show revamp.

On Thursday night The Footy Show drew just 97,000 in 5 cities, 53,000 of whom were in Melbourne, in an 8:30 timeslot.

But Footy Classified, which aired in just 3 cities at 10pm drew 121,000 -78,000 of whom were in Melbourne.

The Sunday Footy Show was even higher at 160,000 at 11am on Sunday morning in 5 cities.

Viewers have failed to warm to the new-look Footy Show with Lehmo, Neroli Meadows, Dylan Alcott and Brendan Fevola, which is produced by Eddie McGuire’s Jam TV in front of a studio audience.

Panel show Footy Classified, featuring Craig Hutchison, Caroline Wilson, Matthew Lloyd and Chris Judd, would cost less to produce and is now rating higher in its 12th season. The Sunday Footy Show led by Tony Jones is now in its 27th season, ironically with Sam Newman now part of the line-up.

Jam TV also produces all 3 shows.

Nine was hoping that by retaining The Footy Show name it could transition viewers across to the new-look show but it appears to have alienated those who were loyal to the McGuire / Sam Newman original.

Will Nine have the patience to leave it on air to build a following….. or would they be better to just give the slot to one of the others?

  1. The Sunday Footy Show figure of 160k includes both the AFL and NRL versions of the program.
For the record the AFL Sunday Footy Show had 55k viewers in Melbourne on 28/4/19, narrowly ahead of the 53k watching the Thursday show

  2. I watch the 10 News, Pointless and Neighbours and SBS and ABC.
Most of the rest is Netflix and I dont watch the Footy Show now, losts its spark, and I just dont watch 7, too many ads, I guess Netflix spoils me with no ads

  3. It’s admirable how loyal Nine (GTV) has been to The Footy Show But after so many attempts to re-incarnate it (without the footy rights for over a decade now mind you), it might be time to retire it. There’s no audience outside the Finale spectacular.

  4. David have we heard anymore about these Footy Show “Specials” & when they’re going to air? Do you think they will still do them?

  5. I like the Sunday show as they actually discuss footy and review the games and issues coming out of them. Its also rather funny when they pick on TJ about his chompers. His reactions are always priceless.

  6. Yeah it’s going to be interesting what they do with it now, last year 403,000 with 201,000 in Melbourne down to this. Like I said elsewhere on Thurs August 01st Nine starts their Ashes Test coverage at 7:30pm aest and all five are over the weekend (1st days of Thurs, Weds, Thurs, Weds, Thurs), so do they hold on to The Footy show until then or do something now.

Obviously Nine would have had a plan for the Footy Show during those Ashes times. Perhaps that was when the specials with Eddie and Sam where going to be slotted in, I now suspect that within a couple of weeks one of those specials will air.

    1. I think the answer is to axe the show now. We know its going to happen – but at those numbers and this many weeks in, its clear the viewers are not happy with the Footy Show. I don’t think the answer is to move footy classified into the 8.30pm Thurs slot either, as viewers like myself don’t want to pick between the front bar and footy classified – We Want Both!

Although challenging for Nine, it would be amazing for use to have Footy Classified on at 8.30 Monday, it really is an amazing show, that said most likely wont happen, however such a shame nine didn’t give it a crack over the easter break.

      1. Footy Classified really is a Monday show anyway the way it’s structured and what they talk about, much like Talking Footy is over on 7Mate at 7:30pm, don’t think FC would work as a before the rounds start show. Also Matilda R yes they have run Footy Classified on GEM/Go at an earlier timeslot in the past, actually surprises me they don’t do that as normal thing each week, Talking Footy is also shown at 11:30pm after it’s 7:30pm 7Mate slot.

    2. 9s also got the rights to the cricket World Cup shared with, I think 9 has the rights to all the Australia matches + all the knockout games.

They’ve got a few Thursday games:

Australia vs West Indies 6th June starts at 7:30pm eastern time
Australia vs Bangladesh 20th June starts at 7:30pm eastern time
Second semi-final 11th June starts at 7:30pm eastern time

      1. Yeah they have all the Aussie matches and the rest on Fox Sports.

I did think of that, however I was thinking they may end up on 9GEM given the teams they’re playing, then again West Indies haven’t been playing that bad lately. See the NRL don’t have a Thursday Night Game on June 06th or June 20th and same for that July 11th Semi-Final as it’s State Of Origin Wed June 05th, Sun 23rd and July 10th, however now with those Footy Show ratings it may be better to have the World Cup on Nine proper and in HD.
