Game of Thrones fans are abuzz with reactions to a shocking penultimate episode.

Explosive scenes saw Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) exacting revenge on King’s Landing which significantly turned her from a heroic role into one much darker, indeed harking to the Mad Queen lineage.

Others including Jon Snow and Tyrion were shocked by her revenge while Cersei watched her kingdom burn in disbelief.

Producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff defended the move.

“I don’t think she decided ahead of time that she was going to do what she did. She sees the Red Keep which is, to her, the home her family built when they first came over to this country 300 years ago. It’s in that moment on the walls of Kings Landing where she’s looking a that symbol of everything that was taken from her, when she makes the decision to make this personal,” said D.B. Weiss.

The final episode screens 11am next Monday on FOX Showcase.

  1. I thought seasons six and seven had awful writing and direction. I was wrong. Season eight is atrocious in every category. And Lena Headey is the best actor in the show had almost no dialogue this season is disgraceful.

  2. Seems a lot of people simultaneously complain about the season being too predictable and not going exactly how they predicted.
I thought danearys’ going mad was a classic GoT. Cookie cutter storytelling and standard character arcs have never applied in GoT. Keeping the audience thinking that anything can happen, anyone can die or turn evil no matter what point of their story arc, its what made the show famous.
That said I was hoping for a more rewarding death for cercie.

  3. I don’t hate what they have done with these final seasons with the story but it would have been sooooo much better if they spread the story of final 2 seasons across 30 episodes (3 seasons of the traditional 10 episode length) rather than the 13 eps we got.

In the early seasons GoT would be a lot of character stuff with sprinkled with a plot twist and the huge battles towards the end of each season. These last two seasons have focused almost exclusively on “wow, this is a big battle”.

  4. Oh I dunno, Jamie. I like various talking points this series has so brutally raised from the whole notion of “who is left when the world keeps taking an eye for an eye” to an ending which many thought was predictable but is now unlikely with Daenarys no longer the people’s favourite. So long as it doesn’t finish explaining it was “all a dream”, I should be happy however it ends. I’m already planning on buying the inevitable complete series blu-ray boxset and devouring the whole thing from the start later in the year.

  5. To my mind GoT has almost jumped the Shark with this final season, all the good storytelling and character development of the past seasons are being casually tossed away in ridiculous carnage ridden and expensive spectacles of mayhem and Lord of the Rings style magical mass destruction, this show deserved a far more intellectual conclusion which obviously would mean a far more complex and drawn out ending, however the clues became a little clearer in this episode of who will be the final winner to sit on the Iron Throne I will wait and see if I’m right.
