“I always thought you won a Gold Logie because of your talent”

Patti Newton questions the Gold Logie nominees saying many people wouldn't know who they were.

Showbiz doyenne and red carpet regular Patti Newton has questioned his year’s Gold Logie nominees telling 3AW’s Nightline many of them were not deserving of the nomination.

“What is happening with the Logies? I always thought you won a Gold Logie because of your talent,” she said.

“Or because of the show you were in, because it was so popular and it was rating unbelievably, and you were a very respected and highly rated performer.

“When did campaigns start? Where you had to do a campaign to get nominated for Gold Logie? The Logies, I think, needs a bit of revamping.”

Newton went on to say that while Eve Morey was probably lovely and a beautiful actress “most people walking down the street wouldn’t know who she was.”

She also suggested most people watching the Logies wouldn’t know who Costa Georgiadis was.

Studio 10 this morning weighed in with Kerri-Anne Kennerley acknowledging campaigning has been around a long time, previously at the hands of network publicists.

“You had publicists. I have seen it with my very own eyes – it could have been Channel 10 in the ’80s- when social media wasn’t invented, they would literally buy hundreds, if not thousands, of TV Weeks. And all the people in the office would sit in the office all night, fill out the coupons and post them in,” Kerri-Anne said.

But while Sarah Harris, who co-hosted the Logie announcements on Sunday, said she liked the Gold nominees this year, Richard Reid disagreed.

“I think there’s a couple that shouldn’t be in there,” he suggested. “No names, no names!”

“There was one I’d never heard of and a few I thought…’Really?'”

Studio 10 has itself turned to social media campaigning for Logies.

  1. I feel like there’s a push to get certain people nominated because “they deserve it” I can remember the days when you would see the popular TV stars nominated for gold and you understood it. Now its like they’ve pulled names out of a hat and said yeah that’ll do.

Patti is correct when she says, where are the popular personalities? Where are the host’s of the top rating show’s? where are the actors and actresses from the popular dramas? The Logies are becoming more and more of a joke and like the Footy show should take an axing and disappear for a while.

There is only one truly credible TV awards, the TV tonight awards. which each year truly do reflect Australian TV audiences. True TV fans read this website and we vote with our hearts and with what we watch and love.

    Vale, TV Logie awards

  2. Patti has a point. I’ve got no idea who the girl from Neighbours is either. I note though that she tops the TV Tonight poll as most likely winner so I conclude I must be one of the odd ones out not knowing her. Or whatever internet savvy fanbase she has, have found this site and voted here as well.
I do find Sam Mac’s nomination questionable. I do know who he is but I think the Cash Cow is more recognisable from that program than him.
Also brings me to the point that I don’t know how relevant TV Week is in the industry these days. I last read it in the 80’s. Much more credible TV related news sources these days such as the site I’m currently on 🙂

  3. No gold Logie nod for Bluey? It wins the Multi’s nearly every night! Not that I think the Logies are irrelevant. I just think a cartoon character winning one would represent how we all view the Logies.
    Except yours Rove.
Say hi to your mum for me

  4. Agree with a lot of her comments.

However her comment about Eve Morey (“Sonya” on Neighbours for very nearly a decade) was pretty harsh and unfair. I would guess many people on the street would actually at least recognise her because of that, even certainly globally such as the UK

  5. When there’s so few options the choice of Logie recipients is limited. Big shows are risky as foreign appeal may be limited, and it’s syndication helps keep big shows alive. Scifi is an area that is gaining greater acceptance, the advantage is they’re much more country neutral. Terra Nova is a bad example of this, although unfortunately timed weather played a small part. Older Australian made scifi shows that all have cult status are Farscape (4 seasons and a miniseries to finish off) , Space: Above and Beyond (1 season, it was ahead of its time, highly recommend), and The Lost World (3 seasons, didn’t get QLD government assistance for a fourth, ended on a cliff hanger. Cheesy but fun).

We need to be a bit more adventurous in this regard. Success of one show can help drive success in other genres.

  6. I Hardly watch TV and yet know who all of the nominees are. Disappointing comments from the Newton’s. I thought they were better than that…

  7. The networks should have a very very short list of nominees they are allowed to put forward for the gold with maybe a grading of criteria for eligibility to be nominated. Then the nominations should be peer reviewed to create the nominee list. Then it should be opened up to the public to vote on.

  8. >> I always thought you won a Gold Logie because of your talent

No, people won because they were the most popular. There’s a hint in the award name “Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television”.

  9. She’s right imo. I barely know who half of them are. Don’t think I’ve watched any of their shows. Hoping for Tom Gleeson or Amanda Keller to win. ?

  10. Not sure on it all with ratings not being what they once where, isn’t what is getting voted for now really just the best of what we have on TV now , well apart from thinking Shaun Micallef should be up for Gold it being his 21th year of TV and all (should be doing the opening monologue as well).

Gardening Australia still makes the Top 20 on Fridays with competition. Last week it was 382,000. The Living Room was 429,000 so only a 42,000 difference there, then 519,000 for Better Homes and Gardens which granted is split between 7 and 7Mate due to the AFL but still.

So Amanda is up (was last year from memory), with close to the same viewers granted this year she had Dancing With The Stars as well, but then Costa is pretty well known (maybe a bit of a cult figure). Waleed Aly won Gold on a show that never wins it’s timeslot and TEN are often the channel who win the most Logies all…

  11. All they ate doing is wringing the last few drops out of this rag. The writing was on the wall when it went to the Gold Coast. If Waleed wins it I will take it all back. He has cred.

  12. Wasn’t everything better in the old days? Didn’t the ancient Greeks say the place was going to the dogs? Doesn’t Gardening Australia usually win it”s time slot?

  13. Also agree that Patti has some valid points regarding the Gold Logie. Yes, campaigns for the Gold has always been there, but not to the extent to it these days, with all tbe social media outlets out there.

But at the same time, there arent many variety tv hosts out there tbese days like tbe good old days, where many would win the Gold.

  14. Your show doesn’t have to be a top ratings winner in order to get some award. I always believed that the public who vote in the awards are the ones who read TV Week – the grocery buying demographic. If they watch your show, you’ve got a good chance of a shoe-in. They have the power of the pen rather than the sword.
Happy to be fully put in my place on this theory.

  15. Patti is not wrong to be cynical. But she’s also been around long enough to know that Logie voting has always been extremely dodgy. Even back in Patti’s heyday there were a number of Logie winners who almost certainly won by sending in enough coupons themselves. It was particularly easy to win that way for State awards, and not too much more difficult with the national awards. That said, some of this year’s Gold Logie raise do leave you wondering just who is pulling the strings and why.

  16. To all the people whinging, what would an alternate list of nominees look like? Scott Cam, Tracy Grimshaw, Manu or Pete Evans, Julia Morris or Chris Brown and the three experts from Married at First Sight? No thanks. I, for one, would rather the actual list of nominees.

      1. Sam Pang winning* two time slots weekly has to help his cause surely?
*of course time slots are a reasonably fluid things these days, nothing starts at 8.30 any more for example.

  17. I disagree. The gold logie has always been public voted and it’s always been a diverse group of nominees to reflect the tv landscape. I don’t watch all the shows, but I know exactly who all 7 nominees are. If you genuinely follow Australian TV, you would know who Costa is and you would have at least heard of Eve Morey’s death storyline on Neighbours or know of her – she’s been on Neighbours for almost a decade. It’s really poor to criticise the Gold logie nominees when they have made contributions to Australian TV in some shape of form.

Let’s say we all have a list of who we want to be up for Gold: it would be impossible for everyone to agree with your list when we all have our favourite stars. Why hasn’t Patti given us her list of 7 nominees? I really doubt people would agree with her list too. I feel like people who are crapping on the Logies don’t watch much Australian TV…

      1. Well they would have been nominated but clearly they didn’t get the votes.

And campaigning for Gold Logie votes is hardly new. Norman Gunston did it in 1976 and won the award as Norman Gunston, not as Garry McDonald.

    1. That’s radical, but I don’t think I’ve seen it suggested before. In the past Logies had two Gold, one male, one female. As a marketing brand I’m positive TV Week would not want to ditch it.

  18. I think Patti Newton has made a valid point there, considering that Gardening Australia and Neighbours have relatively low ratings compared with other Australian shows. Costa Georgiadis and Eve Morey have had extensive careers on television and have made a contribution on television. Possibly a different category would have been more suited. Campaigning has probably had some influence in the nominations.

  19. Having watched the logies for more than 40 years I tend to agree with Patti but as had been pointed out the gold Logie has often been affected by campaigns of one type or another both presently and historically. Having endured year after year of repeat winners it’s been nice that no-one has won consecutively more a decade at least. Personally I look to the peer voted categories for a little cred and mostly find it

  20. Patti is spot on, it has become a farce. I guess you can’t stop people and Networks campaigning, which us contributing to some surprise nominations and wins. TV Week should somehow be able to put a stop to overseas voting though, which is skewing some nominations.
