Stan Laurel named Britain’s greatest comedian

Film, TV, stand-up, actors, hosts ....this is a divisive list from the UK.

Legendary Stan Laurel has topped a curious list of performers in a TV special, Britain’s Greatest Comedian.

The special, screened by retro channel Gold, asked members of the public to vote for their favourites with an expert panel then assembling the final order.

1. Stan Laurel
2. Victoria Wood
3. Billy Connolly
4. Peter Sellers
5. Eric Morecambe
6. Steve Coogan (equal)
6. Ricky Gervais (equal)
8. Spike Milligan
9. Peter Kay
10. Ken Dodd
11. Caroline Aherne
12. John Cleese
13. Tommy Cooper
14. Jennifer Saunders (equal)
14. Dawn French (equal)
16. Ronnie Barker
17. Lee Mack
18. Sacha Baron Cohen
19. Lenny Henry
20. Rowan Atkinson
21. Dave Allen
22. Jo Brand
23. Lee Evans
24. Eddie Izzard
25. Stewart Lee
26. Bill Bailey
27. Micky Flanagan
28. Michael McIntyre
29. Rik Mayall
30. Kathy Burke

Amongst those who missed out were the one and only Charlie Chaplin plus Tony Hancock, Norman Wisdom, Frankie Howerd, Michael Crawford, Sid James, Peter Cook, Kenneth Williams, Catherine Tate, Dick Emery, and Vic Reeves, to name a few.

I’m unclear on what the criteria was given some of these names are comedic actors, others are stand-up acts or TV hosts.
