Sunday Night: June 2

Matt Doran speaks with Captain Kevin Sullivan, the pilot at the controls of Qantas' worst near-disaster in 2008.

Sunday Night‘s Matt Doran covers a story of Qantas flight 72, the airline’s worst near-disaster in 2008.

This incident out of Singapore airport was previously the subject of an Air Crash Investigations episode.

May include re-enactments.

It is the most terrifying mid-air emergency in Australian history. And chances are you’ve never even heard about it.

In October 2008, Qantas flight 72 was on its way from Singapore to Perth. The flight seemed routine. Then suddenly, the plane’s automated systems went haywire and sent the Airbus into a death dive.

Captain Kevin Sullivan was at the controls that day. He had to draw on all the skills he had ever learned as a fighter pilot to bring the plane back from certain disaster. Only his cool head and heroism saved the 315 passengers and crew on board.

This Sunday Night, the previously untold story of Qantas’ worst-ever accident. How a plane went psycho, injuring one hundred passengers and crew, many seriously.

Sunday Night senior reporter Matt Doran sat down with injured passengers, crew members and the hero pilot. And for the first time, Captain Sullivan opens up about what went wrong, how he saved his plane and the lessons we should have learned from this shocking incident.

8.30pm Sunday on Seven.

  1. This man/Pilot has not only saved lives but has shown what Integrity means by resigning from an airline that took to hiding and refusing accountability in every way on every level of humanity and professional ethics. When you consider Mr. Joyce accepts an obscene amount of pay/wages each year to benefit himself and Qantas only that no human really requires to live even an opulent lifestyle, like the Bank CEO’S it’s shameful that the Pilot let alone Fuzzy has been not only unrecognized but diminished in the eyes of Qantas for doing what they were paid to do, save lives. American pilots are so well trained and take their responsibilities with the utmost respect. Man up Qantas and get some B…s.

  2. “This Sunday Night, the previously untold story of Qantas’ worst-ever accident.” Oh Seven, come on. There was no “accident”. It wasn’t even ‘Qantas’ worst-ever íncident’.
And..the story was told a year ago.
Air Crash Investigations S18 E7. Qantas Airways flight 72 nearly falls out of the sky, resulting in investigators searching for the threatening flaw.

  3. For what it’s worth; QF32 and QF72 are different incidents.

QF32 was the Airbus A380 out of Singapore bound for Sydney in 2010 that suffered an uncontained engine failure. This was the airline’s worst near disaster.

QF72 was the Airbus A330 out of Singapore bound for Perth in 2008 that suffered an inflight upset.

Both featured as separate episodes of Air Crash Investigations.

Kevin Sullivan was the captain of QF72, which is the focus of the Sunday Night story.
