ABC & Canadian broadcaster CBC to collaborate

ABC will co-develop drama, comedy, factual, and children’s content with Canada's public broadcaster.

ABC and Canadian public broadcaster CBC have signed a memorandum of understanding which will signal creative and commercial collaboration.

The MoU will build on an existing relationship between both broadcasters and see them co-develop drama, comedy, factual, and children’s content through co-financing or acquisitions “that promote the core values of the public broadcasters.”

ABC will acquire CBC Kids’ original commission Big Blue plus Kiri & Lou and the upcoming sci-fi epic Endings.

CBC has previously acquired Ronny Chieng: International Student, Mustangs FC, Hannah Gadsby’s Nakedy Nudes and Hannah Gadsby’s Oz, as well as format rights to You Can’t Ask That.

ABC managing director David Anderson said: “In a world of global media giants, the outstanding and accessible content produced by like-minded public broadcasters is more important than ever.

“This collaboration between the ABC and CBC will drive our limited resources further, leveraging our strengths to create and share distinctive local content that connects with audiences at home and overseas.”

  1. This is good news. ABC and CBC have similar goals and values as public broadcasters, and we know they’re capable of quality work. This will enhance the viewing choices for both Australian and Canadian audiences.

  2. Nice I’ve liked a few CBC shows over the years, one that stands out in my mind is Being Erica, think it aired on ABC2 back when it was first out.
