Alternative charges to be filed in Craig McLachlan case

Hearing against Craig McLachlan due to take around 3 weeks in November.

Lawyers for actor Craig McLachlan appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court, ahead of a hearing over seven counts of indecent assault and single counts of assault and attempted indecent assault.

But prosecutor Mark Gibson SC told the court alternative charges were also going to be filed “sooner rather than later”.

Up to 30 prosecution witnesses are listed to give evidence at a contested hearing in November, including from overseas, but the number would likely be reduced to about 18, the court heard. It is expected to last 3 weeks.

The allegations surround events between late April and mid-July in 2014 during The Rocky Horror Show stage production.

“What’s alleged is denied,” McLachlan’s lawyer Damien Shields told the court.

The former Doctor Blake Mysteries star has not worked since allegations surfaced in January 2018 while a defamation case against ABC, The Sydney Morning Herald and actor Christie Whelan Browne has been postponed.

McLachlan was not required to appear in court today but will appear for the contested hearing starting on November 18.
