Costa Georgiadis: Grow for Gold

Just 2 years ago he was struggling for an invite, now Costa Georgiadis is up for the Gold Logie.

In 2017 Costa Georgiadis wasn’t sure if he would score an invitation to the Logie Awards.

Two years later he is up for the Gold Logie and Most Popular Presenter while Gardening Australia is nominated for Most Popular Lifestyle.

“How classic is that?” he laughs.

“I suppose being out and about around the country, you meet a lot of people. I traverse a fair cross-section of this great big land we live in.

“When you get your head around how many people you rub shoulders with -in transit, at destinations, schools, community gatherings – you suddenly take stock that you’re fortunate enough to have contact with a lot of people.

“But I might have to do a lot of ringing around to get the preference of some of these bigger names!”

The hirsute host is now planning his outfit for the night, having previously worn a ‘succulent vest’, and ‘floral shoulder pads.’

This year he is planning another horticultural piece, and possibly a floral beard.

And for anybody still unsure about just who Costa is, he has a simple message.

“You need to do a bit of forest bathing and get connected to your garden, then you’ll understand who I am. Grow for Gold!”

1. How important is winning a Logie award?
CG: Awards are important because they recognise not just the front of house, but the back of house as well. The public voted awards are, in a sense, a measure of your reach.

2. What was the TV highlight of your year?
CG: The 30th birthday was a massive highlight. For a show to last 30 years is a big thing.

3. Aside from yourself, who is your tip to win and why?
CG: I’m campaigning for Tom Gleeson for 2020 so that we don’t split the ABC vote. But he’s in with a good chance.

4. If you win, where will you put your Gold Logie?
CG: It would be a 12 month rotation: to the office for a while, then to community gardens network for a while, then down to International Compost Awareness Week HQ, then Victorian Beekeepers Association, out to the Alice and all the communities I work with…. it would be like the moving Archibalds. They would all have to photograph it in their world and I would turn it into a mini online doco.

5. Why should viewers vote for you?
CG: To make gardening great. It’s funny… when you operate in a ‘giving’ place, it’s hard to shift to an ‘asking’ place -even though I realise it’s important on a lot of levels. It’s great for the show to have that recognition and great for ABC.

Voting in the 2019 Logie Awards opens again on Monday June 24.

  1. It’s good to see Costa being nominated for the Gold (and Most Popular Presenter). Finally given Gardening Australia the recognition it deserves at the Logies.

The move to Friday nights, and new host, a few years ago has earned the show some new fans, and extra tv ratings too. Often going neck-to-neck with The Living Room, sometimes coming out the winner.

(Side note: Better Homes and Gardens still the Lifestyle winner though. Where is Joh Griggs Gold Logie nomination?)

  2. Why is he and Gardening Australia suddenly popular? I wish him all the best. My favourite presenter Peter “that’s your bloomin’ lot” Cundall never got this sort of recognition for his time as host.

    1. I suspect the show featuring on Gogglebox probably helped raise the profile of the show as well. Particularly the segment on “peonies” which had the Boxers in hysterics.

  3. Appearing on ‘Get Grubby TV’ probably helps too (ABC Kids) as he targets another demographic. I know toddlers can’t vote but their mums and dads can. And Costa the Garden Gnome is a hoot! Good luck Costa!
