This week on Insight, guest host Ricardo Goncalves hears from those ripped off by scammers.

Australians have reportedly been scammed out of a massive $489 million in 2018 with investment scams and romance scams topping the chart. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. So how do Australians protect themselves and what recourse is there if you do get scammed?

“I don’t think people really understand just how sophisticated the scams are. People thought that I just got an invoice in my inbox randomly and I paid it. It was far more sophisticated than that, it went over a series of months.”

  1. I do not bank or do business online…I don’t answer calls I don’t know the number unless they leave a message and I know them….People say it is safe…it is not…a case of when not if.

  2. It’s sad to see so many people falling victim to scammers. I’m quite vigilant about scammers and can take evasive action, however, a lot of victims are elderly and vulnerable. The methods seem to be becoming more sophisticated. It’s something the government and legislation should keep on top of and it’s good to see this topic being shown on SBS’ Insight.
