Netflix hiring Australian staff

Local office could have as many as 10 staff, in a potential sign of more Australian productions.

Netflix is in the process of setting up a “small Sydney office”, according to media reports.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the streaming giant has started hiring local staff, in a move that could signal the business has plans for more original Australian content.

For several years it has been criticised for its minute local content (recent titles include Tidelands, Nannette and Lunatics, plus several co-productions) and lack of local employees.

Former Twentieth Century Fox head of publicity Sarah Haines has now taken on a new role as head of Netflix’s Australia and New Zealand publicity for original content. Former LinkedIn director of public policy for Asia Pacific and Japan Nick O’Donnell becoms local director of public policy.

A local team of as many as 10 people will initially be based out of a Sydney co-working space, believed to be WeWork.

Netflix currently has Australian agents Pulse, and previously Catapult Communications, to handle media and marketing enquiries.
