“Not for everybody”: Euphoria to undergo edit in Australia

Foxtel will crop one explicit scene of the controversial drama that carries MA15+ classification.

Controversial HBO drama series Euphoria will undergo an edit before it screens on FOX Showcase, TV Tonight can confirm.

Foxtel sources confirm it will crop a shot to comply with the Subscription TV Code of Practice. Press previews have been unedited.

The teen drama will carry an MA15+ classification and screen in a 9:30pm timeslot. The explicit series includes full frontal nudity, drugs, violence, sexting and more. One blurred scene includes a  prosthetic, and likely to be the cropped scene.

Brian Walsh, Foxtel’s Executive Director of Television, said: “This series is not for everybody and it’s not for your 14 year old. Parental Guidance is advised for our customers using streaming and there’s a good reason why the channel timeslot is 9.30pm. The show isn’t always easy to watch, and there is no question it pushes the boundaries, but it is provocative, authentic and unforgettable.”

9:30pm Monday on FOX Showcase.

  1. Meanwhile, there are wall to wall action and war movies realistically showing people being shot and killed and all manner of gruesome injuries, but a scene featuring a shot of a fake? Edit! Edit! Edit! Think of the children!

    1. You can’t blame Foxtel, as a broadcaster they have to comply with the Code. The Code administered by ACMA is to ensure community standards. If the community is looking to alter standards it has to say so, either through ACMA reviews process (and I can’t remember the last) or by telling politicians. If Foxtel were to leave stuff in and breach the code I would be writing a post about that. I might also add the controversies surrounding the show is a marketing dream for Foxtel, so I wasn’t surprised to see a quote sent out.

      1. Thanks for explaining David. I understand Foxtel need to abide by the Code. Don’t understand why, prosthetic or real, breaches a MA15+ subscription code in 2019. Rules need to be relaxed. ACMA should understand viewing habits are a choice.

  2. There really is no valid reason why the additional tier subscription channels, like showcase, couldn’t utilise the R18+ rating. Time the codes were changed and updated.

    1. Unsimulated sex has been shown in European mainstream movies and possibly in some of their pay to view made for TV adult shows as well, these will get R18+ ratings. Admittedly showing R18+ shows on FTA TV would be inviting viewer backlash because of its easy access but for a paid SVOD service which do have parental controls it should be a matter of viewer preference. My only curiosity in this age of ‘Me too’ sexual exploitation controversy is that exhibiting consenting actors portraying non simulated sexual activity will pose more questions than answers about the hypocrisy of today’s entertainment industry.

    2. Technically, there is nothing stopping Foxtel from showing the unedited R18+ version via its On Demand service as that is classed as “narrowcast” which allows R18+ content with the parental control functionality in place.

        1. @troy_story – That is what the law is, not saying that is what they [Foxtel] will do. Generally speaking, narrowcast is pay per view content.
