ABC Chair Ita Buttrose and much-loved performer Hugh Jackman have been awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia in today’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Media doyenne Ita Buttrose has been awarded for her leadership in the media, arts & health while Hugh Jackman is recognised for service to the performing arts and his charitable work against poverty.
Also honoured are names including Sigrid Thornton, Eric Bana, Leigh Sales, Carrie Bickmore, David Campbell, Ken Sutcliffe and Guy Sebastian.
Companion of the Order of Australia
Ita Buttrose
For eminent service to the community through leadership in the media, the arts, and the health sector, and as a role model.
Hugh Jackman
For eminent service to the performing arts as an acclaimed actor and performer, and to the global community, particularly as an advocate for poverty eradication.
Officer (AO) in the General Division
Sigrid Thornton
For distinguished service to the performing arts as a film, television and stage actor, and to professional arts organisations.
Members (AM) in the General Division
Ray Argall
For significant service to film and television as a director and cinematographer.
Suzanne Baker
For significant service to the film industry as a producer.

For significant service to the performing arts, and to charitable organisations.
Jane Caro
For significant service to the broadcast media as a journalist, social commentator and author.

Friendly nudge that the Order of Australia was constituted by the Whitlam government “for achievement and merit in service to Australia or humanity”. Decidedly vague. I guess it encompasses whatever you wish.
Some of these awards really do me laugh. I take it none of these are celebrities that charge for charity appearances and lucky for Jane she didn’t move to New Zealand !
I assume that these ‘stars’ are awarded these honours mostly for their charity work (eg: Carrie Bickmore for her Brain Cancer Charity) and I applaud them for that, otherwise why get honours from the government for doing your job ?
