Richard Moran appointed Nine News US bureau chief

Nine senior cameraman Richard Moran, who has worked alongside Robert Penfold for the past 15 years, was recently named as his successor as Nine News US bureau chief.

Moran was sent to a new posting in Nine’s L.A. Bureau in 2003. During his time there, he covered four presidential elections, numerous deadly hurricanes, the catastrophic Haiti earthquake which affected three million people, and multiple mass shootings.

He has also covered the 2010 Chile mine rescue, various Summer and Winter Olympics and the Academy Awards.

He was previously awarded the Gold Walkley for his work during the 2003 Canberra bushfires – the first television camera operator to win the prestigious award.

He has also worked at Nine’s Canberra Bureau, in Afghanistan immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks and Baghdad in the lead-up to the second Gulf War.

News boss Darren Wick recently said of Moran, “Everyone who’s had the privilege of working with Rich knows he has strong news judgement. He makes things happen on the ground and has been the key player in the coverage of so many breaking news events for Nine.”

He becomes US Bureau Chief from July as Robert Penfold retires.

Tim Arvier becomes the North America Correspondent, having worked in Darwin and Sydney newsrooms, and as an investigative reporter for A Current Affair.

Elsewhere Sophie Walsh has been appointed Europe Correspondent and will join Amelia Adams, based in London. After beginning as an Associate Producer in Nine’s Sydney newsroom, she moved to Brisbane newsroom as a reporter and Weekend Weather presenter. She is replacing Michael Best and will take up her new role in the coming weeks.
