Tom Gleeson wins Gold as Seven, Nine upstaged by ABC.

ABC wins their first Gold Logie in 4 decades as Gleeson speech shocks the room.

Tom Gleeson has snatched the Gold Logie award in a night  bathed in glory for ABC.

“I thought it was Costa’s night to be honest.,”he said.

“I’m in a tricky spot. Because I love it and I hate it.”

But it wouldn’t be a Logies event without some controversy.

In a stunning and frank speech in he derided the award and shocked the room of a “dying industry.”

“Just because all of you want it and I’ve got it, don’t get angry with me. It’s alright, you’ll all survive. It’s a shame this is the last Gold Logie that’s ever going to be handed out — according to Grant Denyer, I’ve ruined the Logies. But at least I won this all by myself,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of concern that I’m turning this award into a joke. This award has done a lot of great things for a lot of different people. In the past it has represented trying to get more diversity on the screen or launching charities and that’s fantastic. But for me it represents a joke, but I love jokes. I really enjoy them. I really think we should all lighten the f*** up.

“The aim of my campaign was just to have fun with the whole thing. Because it all doesn’t really matter. It really doesn’t matter. We can have fun and just be entertaining. People get concerned about people campaigning for the award. Is that legitimate? Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t know. But it is social media. It is just media. I’m just trying to be entertaining through the media. Do you know what would have been weirder? If I campaigned for this award sincerely. That would have been worse. Imagine me just sincerely saying I was humbled by the award. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. It would make me want to vomit.

“I’m taking it as a win for comedy because comedy to me is really important.”

His is the first Gold Logie for the public broadcaster in 4 decades.

ABC upstaged its commercial rivals in a night of multiple wins.

10, Foxtel, Stan and SBS  were also winners.

But the biggest TV networks had a stinker of a night.

Neither Nine nor Seven won a trophy in their own right (Deborah Mailman’s win as Most Popular Actress was for Mystery Road /Bite Club).

It must be a first for both networks.

  1. Well whatever you think about Tom Gleeson, his win, his speech, his campaign he has certainly got people talking about the Logies and paying attention to it.
You might not like the result but that doesn’t make it illegitimate. I’d have thought it was less legitimate for stations to buy up copies of TV Week and have their staff fill out the voting forms. At least the campaigning is now more out in the open.
But then I like Tom, thoroughly enjoyed his campaign, took it in the spirit of good humour and voted for him and Costa and Gardening Australia and Mystery Road etc. I enjoyed his speech. I also enjoyed Dylan Alcott’s speech and Kerry O’Brien’s for very different reasons.
In the interests of full disclosure I haven’t watched the Logies or any other awards show in more than 20 years.

  2. Purposely or inadvertently,it doesn’t really matter …..if he is right and the industry is doomed it means that no one done anything about it,so nothing will happen.
If he’s perceived to be wrong and the systems fine it might be the personnel ……and that’s not going to be acceptable to the industry,so nothing will happen .

  3. How do people not understand the TV Week Gold Logies are a marketing concept that is solely based on getting people to vote – and used to only be able to be voted on by the readers (aka the people who bought a copy) of TV Week?

Their compatriots overseas are the E! People’s Choice Awards in the USA and the National Television Awards in the UK – not the BAFTAS, Emmys, Oscars etc which are all awards by experts.

Although the Logies did introduce the “Most Outstanding” category to give themselves some form of credibility by having an industry vote, the main focus of the awards has always been on popularity. If something isn’t popular, it won’t sell. And that’s what TV Week is all about – selling copies of their magazine.

If you want to complain about who wins the popular votes, blame the people who voted, or blame the system. If you want to reward excellence, check out the…

    1. yep i guess the AACTA awards are for people who really want to take it seriously, but they really need a separate one exclusively for TV….

    2. I remember watching an interview with Denzel Washington where he said that when his film was Oscar nominated the studio made him go over to jury members homes, watch his film with them, then wine and dine them at the end of which he presented them a $10,000 watch. Award shows have their benefits (they certainly benefit the participants) we the audience shouldn’t treat them as the be all and end all of media excellence. Enjoy the show and chill out people.

    3. I voted via a link on this very site for both nominations and the award themselves, which was done without seeing any other part of TV Week site, that is also where people from overseas where able to vote as well using a vpn set to Australia. From what I have read people also voted via their mobile phones to which was limited via having to confirm their phone number.

Basically you don’t have to buy the magazine to vote in fact that directs you to online anyway, of course they are looking to get clicks and ad revenue from that, then again if you have an adblocker the site doesn’t ask you to turn it off to vote.
