Vale: Paul Darrow

UK actor best known for series Blake’s 7, has died.

UK actor Paul Darrow, best known for series Blake’s 7, has died aged 78.

He died following a short illness, a spokesperson confirmed.

Darrow (pictured centre) played Kerr Avon in UK sci-fi, which ran from 1978 to 1981.

He achieved cult status with his performance as the morally ambiguous computer expert Avon, who fought alongside outlaw Blake (Gareth Thomas) against the totalitarian Federation, not because Avon felt it was right, but because he believed it was the best way to stay alive and get rich enough to retire in exile.

He took over as lead character for the final two series of the show after Thomas departed, becoming a favourite with fans.

His other credits included Doctor, Law & Order: UK, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, and he played the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1975 series The Legend of Robin Hood.

  1. Loved the series despite it’s obviously very low budget and cheesy special effects-Avon was just so wickedly cool! One could imagine a decent reboot could well be successful today.
    RIP, Sir.

  2. Absolutely (along with Life on Mars). And Blakes7 was fabulous TV and scifi all the way through. I wonder how many it was created by the man who created the Dalek, Terry Nation?

I have all the box sets and cherish them!
