An all-star cast features in classic murder mystery in this Free to Air premiere.

Set in 1939 while Europe teeters on the brink of war, ten perfect strangers – a reckless playboy, a troubled Harley Street doctor, a dying judge, an uncouth police detective, an unscrupulous mercenary, a God-fearing spinster, a highly decorated general, an anxious secretary and two embittered servants – are persuaded to retreat from their troubled lives to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast.

Cut off from the mainland by appalling weather, their hosts Mr and Mrs U.N. Owen mysteriously absent, they are each accused of a unique and terrible crime by a gramophone recording timetabled perfectly to deliver its indictments after dinner. As the assembled guests begin to realise that not a single one of them has set eyes on the missing Owens, the true reason for their presence on the island becomes horribly clear: they are to be executed, one by one.
But where is the killer hiding? Could it be true that the group harbours a murderer among their number?

Featuring a critically-acclaimed, international cast that includes Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), Aidan Turner (Poldark), Miranda Richardson (Girlfriends), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) and Noah Taylor (Shine).

Saturday 10 August 7.30pm on ABC.

  1. I’m not much of a Marple/Poirot fan, but the spate of recent “one-off” adaptations have been great. I loved the Malkovich take on The ABC Murders and … Ordeal By Innocence. Witness for the Prosecution was good, but not at the same level.

  2. Many of Agatha’s stories are so memorable that their denouement becomes etched in your mind. One viewing will last forever. I’ve seen the 1945 US b&w movie version, now out of copyright, and the 1974 version set at a grand hotel in the Iranian desert. Both used Agatha’s alternate “happy” ending. This BBC mini-series sticks to the original “unsolvable mystery” ending. (Wikipedia)
I would have preferred the ABC to schedule the 3 eps on consecutive nights but they seem to be so short of new material….

  3. This was the first book I can remember reading, and what a thrilling book it is. Complete classic in every way. This mini series is truly fantastic. It stays very true to the book, and represents the cold, dark isolation of the island and what happens on it…

  4. This is a good retelling of the classic Christie tale.
My only regret was the producers kept the play’s revised ending.
I long for a version to be made that follows the original story’s revelation.
Think it would have amazing impact on viewers.
However, we shall enjoy catching up with this one again.
