Auditions: Catfish Australia

Producers looking for confidential discussions around the pitfalls of online romance.

Casting is now underway for Catfish Australia.

The series by Eureka Productions was recently announced as part of 10’s second Pilot Week experiment.

“Are you in an online relationship and have yet to meet in real life? Do you change your social media photos to meet people online? Has someone fallen in love with your online persona? Do you need to come clean?” a casting notice asks.

“No matter the story, we want to hear from you! Conversations with a producer are confidential and will not be filmed.”

  1. This could be interesting, as long as it isn’t sensationalised. A couple of my friends have been catfished on dating sites, no harm done, but they were both surprised at their own gullibility.

  2. The blurb seems to be seeking perpetrators perspectives. But what about the victims perspectives too. When it comes to online personas, there should be an understanding of the risks involved. It’s not like meeting people through friends or work, for example.

Can it be considered false advertising or is it not accepting someone the way they are even though the pictures show a different appearance? Is there any recourse or legislation?

    1. How many people one meets in person don’t really reveal the truth about themselves, and portray someone quite different? You can only really charge somebody if there’s financial loss, not time wasting or gross embarrassment.
