Actor David Gulpilil has been honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the 2019 NAIDOC Awards.
The honour recognises his body of work including credits such as Walkabout, The Last Wave, Crocodile Dundee, Rabbit Proof Fence, Young Ramsay, Boney, Rush and The Timeless Land.
But the 66 year old Yolngu elder did not appear at the event held in Canberra on Saturday with daughter Phoebe Marson saying, “Our father David Gulpilil is retiring.
“He’s sick. He has lung cancer and one day soon he will go to the Dreamtime.”
In a pre-recorded interview Gulpilil said, “Thank you very much for watching me.
“Never forget me. While I am here, I will never forget you. I will still remember you, even though I am gone forever, I will still remember.”

So much love for this beautiful creature of life. If the reflection back of his gift and magnificence is the appreciation felt by millions of people around the world, I hope he is bathed in a bright warm glow that is one with the Dreamtime.
Very sad news. May he have as peaceful a journey as possible.
Yep… an amazing man…?⭐
