Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD confirms ending at S7

Agent Coulson and the longest-running Marvel series will wrap with its 7th season.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will end with its upcoming seventh season.

Season 6 is about to conclude in the US with 13 episodes confirmed for Season 7.

Karey Burke, President, ABC Entertainment said, “Agent Coulson is one of the most beloved cinematic heroes of our time, and we’re so glad to have spent 7 seasons with him and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as they saved the world from countless unimaginable big bads.

“I am so impressed with the eternally fresh, heart-pounding, and emotional stories the writers and creative team at Marvel Television brought to life that led S.H.I.E.L.D. to be the longest-running Marvel series to-date.”

“It will be bittersweet saying goodbye to Marvel Television’s flagship series,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television. “Our success is a true testament to the extraordinary fans and we remain forever indebted to them for their endless support. We want to end on a very high note and complete the incredible saga after seven amazing seasons and 136 hours of quality television.”

Season 6 is also screening in Australia on 7flix.

  1. Might be OK for the mainland states to see it as the Tasmanian Seven does not have a 7flix channel. I have to go the freeview app and cast it to my TV via a chrome cast device. 7 treat Tasmania as a second class state, but I am guessing that the shopping channels will be in Tasmania,

      1. True David, but Southern Cross brands itself as Seven Tasmania, at least WIN still calls itself WIN and not Ten TAS. I can’t say what Nine does as I very rarely watch it.

  2. It’s no surprise. If you understand the way that television works in the US, 7 seasons is correct. A hit show signs their talent for three years on a basic contract, then ups the pay rate for the next four. Beyond 7 years, the payment for talent can skyrocket- look at how many shows bow out at 7 years. It’s only the very few really big hits that can absorb the massive increase in pay.

    1. There are other ways of paying leading actors, like making them executive producers or increase their royalties from merchandising. It’s not unusual for familiar support actors to get demoted to reoccurring roles or be replaced altogether, especially if they demand a salary increase, showrunners know who are worth the money if several seasons are planned, it’s risky business for any actor to believe they are indispensable. Most show cancellation decisions are due to end of contracts and big studio contingency plans.

  3. Apparently ABC (US) wanted to cancel after 4 seasons but Disney (who owns both Marvel and American ABC) forced a renewal for Season 5 and I assume 6 and 7. It’s a good time to end it I think. Cast and crew seem ready to wrap it up and ABC would be keen to get rid of it.

  4. I think it is definitely time to end AOS, this ways producers should have enough time to rape it up on ABC (USA).
Started strong with the movie tie ins but the season where to long for the casual Marvel fan to comit to and lost live viewers after end of Season 1.
We will be seing more Marvel content on Hulu and Disney+ in the future though with shorter season so hopefully less filler episodes and better overall show (lession learned hopefuly at disney/marvel).

    1. Yep they’ll be doing that a lot now, especially with Disney having FOX as well, they’ve already moved The Orville to Hulu for Season 3 as of next year, even Comcast have agreed to sell its Hulu stake to Disney for at least $5.8 billion over the next 5 years.

From what I have read and that was with them winding up Gotham, Disney want to use FOX as a more “live/event” TV destination for viewers, like how they’re putting NFL Thursday Night Football on, WWE Smackdown and are in discussions to have WWE NXT as well.

Fox will de-emphasize scripted programming, double down on news, sports and reality programs, and give even more of a priority to having its own shows on its own air.

And ABC will no doubt do similar to attract Free To Air Viewers … it seems the way now.

  5. I think most fans of Marvels agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were anticipating the shows end two seasons back, but Josh and Jed Whedon came up with some new time jumping alternative universe ideas to give the show an extended send-off that will guarantee it on TV screens for many years to come. Personally, I looked forward to this Marvel show it was a good time filler and was the closest TV offering to the cinematic Avenger universe grabbing the box office receipts at that time. Now with Stan Lee gone Marvel will need to go through a process of creative renewal, have a rethink, because Marvel will need more than Disney+ to release new generation products in the future.
