Oops. Calombaris cover story “terrible timing”.

Red faces as mag editor explains copy had gone to presses before headlines this week on MasterChef judge.

Good Weekend editor Katrina Strickland took to social media after yesterday’s cover story on MasterChef‘s George Calombaris was panned.

She said the lift-out was printed days ago, before revelations MAdE Establishment had underpaid staff by $7.8m.

The article, published by Nine Entertainment Co., was meant to address mental health.

“I know I know, George Calombaris on the cover. Not ideal – the perils of early print deadlines. But this @goodweekendmag cover story is not about George per se – it’s about an important issue in the restaurant industry: chefs, mental health, untimely deaths, and attempts at last to do something about it,” she added on Instagram.

Calombaris did not attend The Project party alongside other network talent on Friday.

  1. Colombaris is a chef. I worked in the industry for twenty five years and I can safely say that chefs and accounting don’t get along. It’s his people in payroll who screwed this up, whether he knew or not is the only question. If he was complicit with the situation, then he should be held accountable, but I would wager that he really didn’t know what was going on there.

  2. Paleo Pete is still terrorising society, so I can’t see Calombaris off air any time soon. This nation lauds crooks like Ned Kelly and Alan Bond…

  3. Personally, I believe in Calombaris’ sincerity in his remorse over this issue and hope all affected employees are promptly and appropriately reimbursed, and that he returns to MasterChef for a twelfth season.

  4. Terrible timing?! Come on! It may have been printed before “this week’s news”, but the case has been before the courts for weeks, the charges have been known about for months and there have been numerous prominent media reports about Calombaris’ dodgy business practices. It wasn’t bad timing, it was flat-out clueless.

      1. His company and you’ll find he is a small shareholder with a CEO and Board ,but he is the face of all the restaurants will be forking out the dish..not George’s pocket

    1. Disagree. He is not going to quit and I doubt Ten would sack him. I reckon if they did they would risk losing all 3 of the judges something they cannot afford to do given MC is still one of their most popular programs. It was interesting though George refused an opportunity to defend himself on The Project the other night. You’d think Ten might pressure him to try and provide some sort of explanation, although I guess his actions are pretty indefensible.

      1. Yeah agree, if they tried to get rid of George I’m pretty sure Matt & Gary would go too in solidarity. Think they said some years ago it’s all 3 of them or none of them. They are a team.
