Stranger Things 3 breaks Netflix records

Timing is everything…

Stranger Things has broken Netflix records with 40.7 million member accounts have watched at least part of the third season in its first 4 days.

Strategically released over the July 4 holiday in the US, that’s the fastest a Netflix original has ever accumulated such a large audience.

18.2 million member households have already finished the 8 part season, however total number of viewers or average audience per episode has not been divulged.

By comparison, Netflix said in April that The Umbrella Academy was viewed in 45 million member households worldwide in a month, and in January that Sex Education and You were on pace for 40 million global views in their first months.

Netflix counts a “view” as a member account having watched 70 percent of one episode of a series or 70 percent of a film.

  1. In this age of multiple viewing options, a few shows are still able to bring people together in a shared experience – reminiscent of the days of old, when we had four channels and there were true broadcast events that everyone would talk about the next day. Stranger Things is one of those shows.

    • If you mean watercooler buzz then yes it has this like GoT. If you mean family viewing then Lego + Ninja do this, maybe Gogglebox. Stranger Things I guess works for older family viewing, teens up.

Good to know, was wondering about how clicks are counted on streaming when talk was on the OzTam ratings system in a thread the other day when it was said it would be good if everyone could be counted, guess similar would apply to iView and etc., as well.

    • Yes, viewing just 70 percent of one episode is not a proper ‘like’ indicator for any show, I must confess that I have watched (or struggled) through 3 episodes of one or two of those much hyped Netflix clunkers, I suppose that may be considered a ratings success by Netflix as well.
