Vale: Rutger Hauer

Dutch actor best known for Blade Runner and Sin City, has died.

Veteran Dutch actor Rutger Hauer, best known for Blade Runner and Sin City, has died aged 75.

He died in the Netherlands on Friday after a short illness, his agent confirmed.

Hauer played the murderous replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner, giving a famous speech during a face-off with Harrison Ford which he helped write himself.

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe,” he is seen telling Ford. “Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”

Hauer was also well known for horror and vampire roles, starring as Van Helsing in Dracula 3D, and as the vampire Barlow in Salem’s Lot, filmed in Australia in 2004.

He had a prolific screen career with credits including Sin City, Batman Begins, Ladyhawke, Flesh + Blood, Blind Fury, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Armageddon, True Blood, Merlin, The 10th Kingdom, Alias, Smallville, Galavant, The Last Kingdom and Channel Zero.

Hauer was working to the end with 5 projects still to be released. He was currently filming A Christmas Carol with Guy Pearce for Netflix.

  1. Another Australian production, 1989s: ‘Salute Of The Jugger’-he was often seen in Dutch films on SBS in the 80s and nineties as he was a regular in Paul Verhoeven’s early work in Holland.
    RIP, Sir.

  2. I watch “Blade Runner” in an Year 11 English class, around 2 decades after it was released (I did Year 11 in 2002 in case you are wondering), and I didn’t know this actor until now, and that he was in Blade Runner. I got it on DVD so I might watch it in the next couple of days.

BTW, Blade Runner 2049 is very good, but a bit long.

  3. I loved him in Ladyhawke and teared up when he died in Blade Runner. And as Zoodle pointed out he was in that Kylie video (my favourite Kylie song not just because Hauer was in it but for the moody lyrics).

    1. Yeah, I don’t know if Sin City is a particularly memorable role. But the ones I would’ve chosen aside from Blade Runner (Ladyhawke, Blind Fury, Galavant) are all mentioned in the article, so I can’t complain really.

  4. I feel like such a dork for knowing this, but upon hearing his name, I seemed to recall that he appeared in Kylie Minogue’s On A Night Like This back in 2000. Turns out that my memory hadn’t been playing tricks on me. He has been very fortunate to have such a colourful career.
